3. What is the Catholic Church? What are some of the requisites to become
The Catholic Church teaches that it is the one, holy, catholic and apostolic church founded by
Jesus Christ in his Great Commission, that its bishops are the successors of Christ's apostles,
and that the pope is the successor to Saint Peter, upon whom primacy was conferred by Jesus
Christ. The requisites to become a member is A personal commitment of faith in Jesus Christ for
salvation. Baptism by immersion as a testimony of salvation. Completion of the Church's
membership class and its requirements. Basic agreement with the Church's statement of faith.
Church today called sacrament, because It is a visible sign of an invisible grace. of the notion of
both Jesus Christ and the Church as sacrament. As Christians, we share the belief that the
Risen Lord is present in his Church. This is the basis for speaking of the Church as sacrament.
5. Discuss the threefold ministry of Christ. 15 points
a. Priestly-
Christ, whom believers draw near to in confidence, offered Himself as the sacrifice for
humanity as High Priest Old Testament priests declared the will of God, gave the covenant
of blessing, and directed the processing of sacrifices. The priest represented humankind
before God. While humankind took the office of priesthood in their weakness, Jesus holds
the position with an indestructible power that overcomes the weakness of humanity as
described throughout the book of Hebrews. As High Priest, Christ became one with humanity
in human weakness, offered prayers to God, chose obedience through suffering, and
sympathized with the struggles of humanity.
b. Prophetic-
Christ is the mouthpiece of God as the Prophet, speaking and teaching the Word of
God, infinitely greater than all prophets, who spoke for God and interpreted the will of
God. The Old Testament prophet brought God's message to the people. Christ, as the Word,
the Logos, is the source of revelation. ] Accordingly, Jesus Christ never used the messenger
formula, which linked the prophet's words to God in the prophetic phrase Thus says the
Lord.
c. Kingly-
Christ, exalted High Priest, mediates the sin that estranges humankind from the fellowship of God. In
turn, he has full rights to reign over the church and world as King. Christ sits at the right hand of
God, crowned in glory as "King of kings and Lord of lords". "God put this power to work in Christ
when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above
all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this
age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head
over all things for the church."] So priest, prophet and king are the threefolds.
Explain your own mission. Where do you fit in these categories? 5 points
For me, I can say I belong to priestly or prophetic because these all I can do is to serve God to spread His
gospel to my family and even to my friends. Maybe I did not belong to kingly but serving God through
sharing the words can bring a change to someone’s relationship with God.
And lastly, as future educators someday, I will show to my students about my goodness so that they see
me as good follower of God.
6. Discuss the Church as… ( 3 points each )
a. One- This means that it is a single, united and global Church which has its basis in Christ
Jesus. Holy: the Church is holy, because it is the Body of Christ with Jesus as the head. This
does not mean that all members of the Church are sin free.
The first of the four marks is oneness. Pope Francis explains that the Church “is one because
her origin is in the Triune God, the mystery of unity and full communion”
b. Holy- The Church is holy, because it is the Body of Christ with Jesus as the head. This does
not mean that all members of the Church are sin free. It means that the Church and her
sacraments help to make the faithful holy. ' The role of the Church is to spread the Word of God
universally across the world.
c. Catholic- It means that the Church and her sacraments help to make the faithful holy. Catholic:
the word catholic literally means 'universal. ' The role of the Church is to spread the Word of
God universally across the world. Apostolic: the origins and beliefs of the Church started out
with the apostles at Pentecost.
d.Apostolic- When we say that the Church is apostolic, we mean that it continues the teachings
and mission of the apostles, upon whom Jesus founded the Church.
Our Church is apostolic because it holds and teaches the faith, as taught to the twelve
apostles by Christ himself. We refer to the apostles as “hand-picked successors” since
Jesus chose them to continue his mission after his death and Resurrection. He entrusted
the leadership of his Church to the apostle Peter saying, “You are Peter, and upon this
rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it”
(Matthew 16:18). Thus Peter became the first bishop and pope. Through these actions,
Jesus wasn’t setting up his friends in positions of power, influence, and honor. Instead,
he was calling them to a life of service as missionaries for his Church. All the bishops
and popes who have followed, up to the present day, share this mission.
