OPTIMUM SIZING & SITTING

CHAPTER 3

3 Optimum sizing & sitting

of substations
1.1 INTRODUCTION
The best size and spacing of sub-stations is that which results
in the least annual cost of the sum of fixed charges on sub-stations
and feeders, operation and maintenance, and losses .
-Increasing the number of substations for a given load density tends
to increasing total cost.
-However, increasing the number of substation reduces the cost of
feeders and feeder losses . Clearly than, the least total annual cost is
a function of substation and feeder cost, capacity of feeder, and load
density.
The following symbols will be used to determine the relationship of
the above factors in deriving an equation for total annual cost:

D Load density
KVAs Substation KVA capacity
S Distance between substations
a Fixed charge on feeder equipment LE/year
b Cost of feeder /Km
C Cost of part of substation capacity
d Cost of each KVA of substation
KVAf Feeder KVA capacity
nf number of feeders wire supply the loads in 1 Km2
Cs Cost of substation /Km2

OPTIMUM SIZING & SITTING
CHAPTER 3

Ct Total annual cost of substation & feeders /Km2

The following relations used to determine the optimum size of sub-
station and the spacing between them.

KVAf= 3 *V*I KVA.

nf=DS2/KVAf

Cost of feeders to supply loads in the unit area

=nf*cost of feeder
=(D/KVAf)*(a+bS/2)

Substation cost to supply unit area

=(C/S2)+dD

Ct=(D/KVAf)*(a+bS/2)+(C/S2)+dD

 For optimum cost:

(dCt/dS) = 0
(Db/KVAf) = 2C/S
S=1.59(C*KVAf/Db)1/3
KVAs=DS2
KVAs=D(1.59)2*(C*KVAf/Db)0.666
