)In your own words, describe the procedure of centering the workpiece before other operations

With a lathe machine having a four-jaw chuck.

Centering on a four jaw is normally done with a dial indicator. Place the workpiece in the chuck and get
is as close as you can by eye with two jaws opposite one another. Set the other two jaws just touching
the workpiece to keep it from flopping around. Arrange the dial indicator so it’s reading the workpiece
close to the chuck. Set the indicator to zero in the middle of one of the tightened jaws. Rotate the chuck
180 degrees and read the workpiece in the middle of the other jaw. Note the variance between the
readings. Turn the chuck so the indicator is reading the side where the jaw is too far from center. Loosen
the other jaw and tighten the the too-far jaw until you have moved the workpiece half the variance
previously observed. Tighten up the jaw you loosened previously and rotate the chuck 180 degrees for
check. Repeat until there is no variance between the two sides, 2–3 passes should get it. Once you get it
dialed in, rotate the chuck 90 degrees, to one of the just touching jaws (assuming a symmetrical
workpiece.) Tighten that jaw until the dial indicator gives the same reading as the jaw pair you have
balanced. Tighten the other jaw and repeat the 180 degree swing for check. Once you have the same
reading on all 4 jaws, the workpiece is centered. Tighten up all the jaws to final tightness and then check
all 4 jaws again to make sure you didn’t move it.
