William Shakespeare is one of the greatest play writer of all time. His
plays are very famous because of one special thing that is there in many
of his plays is that most of his plays has heroines and not heroes. The
Merchant of Venice is one of the example which shows us this.
Portia is seen as a very important character of the play and is the
female protagonist of the play. She is a beautiful and intelligent wealthy
heiress from Belmont. Portia is a loyal daughter who obeys her father’s
will, even though she feels her future happiness would be at stake if
she does not find a perfect match. She wishes to assist Bassanio in
choosing the right casket but she must stay true to her father’s will and
remain silent.
In the further scene some new traits in Portia’s personality is seen. She
is intelligent, witty and has presence of mind. She is capable of forming
elaborate plans and has courage to execute them.
