EVALUATION REPORT
INTRODUCTION
Exarrined stainless steel pipes Matil A. §. the report is shown in the photograph in Figure 1. It
is stated that the pipes with codes 1H, 2H, 3H, 4H and 5H have surface damage. It is stated
that the pipes with the codes 1S, 2S and 5S are also undamaged.
Examinations of pipes; chemical analysis, tensile tests, hardness measurements and
microscopic examinations (microstructure, SEM, EDS examinations).
‘An evaluation report has been prepared by the observations and investigations performed by
my part using the data of the investigation report that has been formed by MATIL A$.

If the measured chemical compositions of the stainless steel pipes are compared with the
standard quality values (Table 2);
MRThe measured chemical composition of the stainless steel pipe with code number 1H is
compatible with AISI 304 L quality.
The measured chemical compositions of the 2H, 3H, 4H, 1S and 2S stainless steel pipes are
close to AISI 304 L quality, they are not fully compatible. Nickel contents are lower than the
value given in the standard,
Measured chemical compositions of SH and 5S stainless steel pipes are close to AISI 316 L
quality, they are not fully compatible. Molybdenum content is lower than the value given in the
standard. The nickel content of the 5S coded stainless steel pipe is also slightly below the
value given in the standard,
Results of Hardness Measurement and Evaluation:
Hardness values were measured in the range of 138 ~ 160 HV. These hardness values are
characteristic hardness values of austenitic stainless steels (AIS! 304/304L, AIS! 316/316L) in
the annealed condition. They are appropriate values.
Microstructural Investigations and Evaluation:
The material of the examined stainless steel pipes is of austenitic stainless steel
microstructure, The whole cross section of its thickness has the same microstructure and is
homogeneous.
In the inclusion tests performed according to DIN 50602 -K1, oxide-based inclusions were
detected in pipe materials other than 5S. The most oxide-based inclusions were detected in
‘the material of the 5H and 2S coded pipes. Overall total index K1 = 116.04 and 91.71. In others,
“Overall otal index K1” is in the range of 4.90 - 40.87. The detected oxide inclusions did not
cause any negative effects on the mechanical properties of the pipes.
Mechanical Investigations and Evaluation:
Tensile tests of the material of the stainless steel pipes were carried out. The determined yield
strength is 235 — 302 MPa, tensile strength is in the range of 573 — 658 MPa, the elongation
rale is over 50%. These tensile test values are characteristic values of austenitic stainless
steals (AISI 304/304L,, AISI 316/316L) in the annealed condition. They are appropriate values,
Bending Test Results and Evaluation:
Bend test specimens were extracted from the examined stainless steel pipes and the bending
test was performed. No cracking was observed in the bending tests.
Inspection of Surface Defects and Evaluation:
Visible surface defects in the pipes examined were microscopically examined. As can be seen
from the image photographs and SEM EDS analysis of the examination, itwas understood that
the defects on the surfaces of the pipes were surface contamination, scratches and surface
lamination. Scratches reach a maximum depth of 200 microns. No negative reflection of the
detected scratches and surface laminations on the mechanical properties of the pipes wasobserved. Austenitic stainless steels are ductile materials. It is considered that minor surface
defects will not affect the mechanical properties,
Conclusion:
The chemical composition of one of the stainless steel pipes defined as AIS! 304 L is
compatible with AISI 304 L quality. The chemical composition of the others is close to
AISI 304 L quality, not fully compatible. Nickel contents are lower than the value given in the
standard.
The chemical composition of the stainless steel pipes defined as AISI 3016 L is close to AISI
316 L quality, its not fully compatible. Molybdenum content is lower than the value given in
the standard. The nickel content of the 5S coded stainless steel pipe is also slightly below the
value given in the standard,
The material of the examined stainless steel pipes is of austenitic stainless steel
microstructure. The whole cross section of its thickness has the same microstructure and is
homogeneous.
The hardness and tensile test values of the examined stainless steel pipes are characteristic
values of austenitic stainless steels (AIS! 304/304L, AIS! 316/316L) in the annealed condition.
They are appropriate values.
It has been observed that the defects on the surfaces of the examined pipes are surface
pollution, scratches and surface lamination. Scratches are at most 200 microns deep. No
negative reflection of the detected soratches and surface laminations on the mechanical
properties of the pipes was observed. Austenitic stainless steels are ductile materials. It is
considered that minor surface defects will not affect the mechanical properties.
