WEEK 1-3
LET’S ANALYZE
Activity No. 1.
Getting acquainted with the essential terms in studying environmental sciences will not be
sufficient. What matters is that you should be able to discuss the interrelationship
environment, development, social progress, and environmental ethics. Now, I will require
you to explain your answers thoroughly.

1. Answer:
- Environmental science is critical for understanding the importance of the
environment and the global process that reflects everything we do.
The subject encompasses climate change, animal survival, air quality, ecosystem, etc.
It also includes disciplines and topics of study like physics, biology, chemistry,
geography, and oceanography, among others. Environmental science informs us on
how to protect the natural environment in the face of rising global civilization and
anthropogenic activities that destroy natural resources and ecosystems. Some
environmental concerns were identified such as overpopulation, food, and water
supply, deforestation, climate change, etc. Overpopulation is the most pressing issue
in the global context, as it continues to rise year after year, and is thus unsustainable
for us as a species or for the environment. Additionally, one of the consequences of
urbanization is a lack of food and water supplies, which is a critical issue that must be
adequately addressed. Food production is currently a problem due to soil degradation,
and thus, agriculture is affected in producing crops for food supply that people are
seeking to resolve to ensure a stable pace for all people. Water Supply is affected by
pollution and a lack of cleanliness, and it cannot be supplied to people since
contaminated water might harm their health. Moreover, deforestation is also an issue
for the environment, as removing forest areas and chopping down trees destroys
wildlife habitats and can lead to soil deterioration. Lastly, due to the accumulation of
greenhouse gases as a result of human activity, climate change is a severe problem
that we are currently experiencing. Environmental science should incorporate
dimensions since it helps determine the ecosystem's susceptibility and hence prevent
ecological alteration. The environmental dimensions are essential in measuring the
effects of deterioration on air, water, and land quality. As a result, integrating
dimensions to detect potential pollution is strongly recommended to ensure human
safety.

2. Answer:
- Science is a field that aims to generate significant knowledge about everything
through logical and methodological processes. It is responsible for acquiring new
knowledge to explain the complexity of something. It incorporated 7 basic principles
namely empiricism, uniformitarianism, parsimony, uncertainty, repeatability, the
proof is elusive and testable questions. All knowledge is derived by observation,
according to empiricism. Uniformitarianism is a concept that claims that the earth's
previous processes and patterns continue to operate in the present and will continue in
the future. Parsimony is a theory that determines which of two plausible explanations
is preferable based on which assertion is clear. Uncertainty is a concept when new
evidence is given with existing evidence in a study. As it may invalidate the generated
theories, it alters its explanation and knowledge. Next, in every study, repeatability is
used to determine whether the conclusion is valid or not, since experiments must go
through trial and error to produce the same result as the prior test. The proof of
elusive is also part of the principle because explanation evolves depending on the
evidence supplied, and so proof of the research is difficult to establish if additional
evidence is presented. Finally, testable questions are employed to determine whether
the come-up theory is valid or not.

4. Answer:

- Ethics is essential in the study of environmental science to generate an ethical

relationship between humans and the natural environment as well as non-human
individuals. One feature that enables us to recognize environmental concerns and
measures to preserve biodiversity and ecological welfare is the connectivity of all
life forms. Integrating ethics is also crucial in a global context since it can aid us,

as humans, in respect and using morals when dealing with the environment. As a
result, human values play a critical role in assessing some environmental
initiatives or events. However, humans have differing perspectives on the
importance of various elements and hence value each differently. A person living
in an underdeveloped country, for example, may appreciate a vast forest as an
agricultural space to produce food and earn, rather than as a beautiful and calm
landscape to escape from the crowded city. A person living in a developing
country, on the other hand, appreciates a forest as a potential location for
infrastructure upgrades. Additionally, people who enjoy planting will make an
effort to keep the plants and flowers around them in good condition. Thus, people
interpret the environment by their respective ideologies.

WEEK 1-3
IN A NUTSHELL
Activity No. 1.
Environmental science is an interdisciplinary science that ensures a holistic study and
understanding of the natural scope of environmental science and its whole systems. The study
of the environment and human dimensions is an integral part requires deeper understanding
on the role of human towards sustainability as well as the sustainable use of resources and the
growing issue and conflicts between the social, economic, and environment. Based on the
definitions and the essential elements in the study of environmental and the learning exercises
that you have done, please feel free to indicate your arguments or lessons learned below.

3. The environment is crucial for both living and non-living organisms since it is where we
spend our existence. As a result, we need to keep it habitable.

4. Environmental science is essential in every field since it aids everyone's understanding of

the world surrounding them. It is also responsible for providing different ideologies on how
human activities influence the ecosystem.

5. One of the most significant environmental challenges is human population expansion.

Given that humans are accountable for the phenomena, the environment may be at risk of
degradation.

6. Food production is currently a problem due to soil degradation, and thus, agriculture is
affected in producing crops for food supply that people are seeking to resolve to ensure a

8. Photosynthesis is required for the growth of many plants and the procedure for providing
plants adequate nutrition.

9. By absorbing light energy from the sun, chlorophyll promotes plant development of high-
energy chemical bonds.

10. The most vital measure that people can do to slow or stop environmental degradation is
to practice ecological conservation. Creating sustainable development is preferable to doing
nothing.
