Case 13: Case of Sudesh

Sudesh got a very good offer in an engineering company in United States. This company,
Innovative machines Inc. was based in San Francisco and was a huge multinational company
with employee friendly culture and was also a good paymaster. Sudesh, BTech from IIT
Kanpur, has already worked in a Public Sector Unit in India for ten years and has reached
position of Assistant General Manager. He was highly respected, had a bungalow provided
by the company along with two servants and a chauffeur driven car. Though his salary was
not very lucrative, he had many hidden perks under executive compensation scheme.
However he was not very happy with the work as it was quite monotonous, lacked challenges
and freedom for innovation. When he resigned, all his subordinates gave him an emotional
farewell with a costly wristwatch as a gift. Two subordinates got up and spoke about their
boss. Their speech was full of respect and gratitude.

When Sudesh shifted to San Francisco, he noticed a big change in the work culture. People
seldom spoke with each other in the company and his subordinates used to come to his cabin
without asking his permission. They used to call him “Hi, Sudesh” instead of “Hello sir”.
Though he was technical head of a department here, a much bigger post that his previous job,
there was no specific act of respect he could find while interacting with his team. Everybody
was professional and focused only at work. Work was full of challenges and salary was
awesome. This job was surely of the worth of the education he has taken, unlike the previous
one. Here he was staying in a well furnished 2BHK apartment in a 50 storied building and
had no servants though there were all latest technology machines to help him in household
work. He had to drive his own car through traffic. Even the Managing Director of the
company used to drive his own car to office.

Somehow, Sudesh was not very happy with the work here and kept on thinking whether he
has taken a right decision of leaving his old job. Many a times, he used to take out the well
preserved wrist watch gifted to him by his old subordinates. He was afraid that his
dissatisfaction may one day reflect in his work at the new place. He now felt a need to get
appointment of some career consultant or talk to his friend who was a HR manager in another
company in United States.
