(a) Read the following passages carefully and answer the questions given below: The whole movement of man's life is towards greater freedom. As a child grows up, his dependence upon his parents and family gradually decreases while his freedom and self-reliance increases all the time. The goal of life seems to be headed in the direction of complete liberty, But what do we understand by the word "freedom" ? Freedom only means the capability of self-government. For the highest purpose of freedom is to make us capable of governing ourselves, Freedom does not mean liberty to do anything that one pleases. Freedom has no meaning without responsibility. All progress is a process in which we learn how to make the right choices, Hence it won't be far from the truth to say that all values are created in freedom. And what, one may ask, is the purpose of freedom? The purpose of freedom is only ‘one's perfection. Freedom is the necessary condition in which the aim of perfection may be achieved. Complete freedom of choice means complete freedom to do what you want to do and is the only means to self-realization. A fully realized person is the highest aim not only because he fulfils himself, but also because being fully realized, he helps others to achieve their true strength. Freedom means total self-discipline, for discipline alone, gives us freedom. Disciplines the means of achieving that which a free mind has evolved. Discipline is a passage to freedom, for the more disciplined you are, the freer ygu are to do what you desire. Punishment and discipline must be imposed upon you if you cannot discipline yourself, Discipline means order while freedom may exist in chaos. And nothing worthwhile can be achieved where there are disorder and anarchy. Chaos has no power to affect anything worthwhile. So give up all ideas "yourmay have: Know that only he has the liberty that has control: Only he has the speed:that has brakes, only he must fly who can land. Liberty without control is like a car without brakes. It will crash .-: Freedom has no meaning if it does not aim to achieve the objectives of humanity, Questions: 1, What does a child acquire as he grows old? 2. What does development refer to? © v Gon. 379-NM-7007-19. 3 “3, What does complete freedom of choice refer to ? 2 4. wnat happens if a person is‘more disciplined ? 2 5S. Find aut words from the passage which mean the same as 2 | @) ability. : | (i) command. (b) Have you ever walked through a cloud of gnats on a hot summer day, only to have them follow you? No matter how you swat at them, or even if you run, they won't leave you alone. If'so, then you have something in common with an atom. Atoms are the building blocks of molecules, which when combined, make up everything. From the smallest one-celled amoeba to every person who has ever lived, and even to the largest and brightest stars in the sky, atoms are everywhere. Even way back in the time of ancient Greece, they wondered about atoms. That's where the word comes from, ancient Greece. The word Atoms, when translated into English means something that cannot be divided any further. So what does an atom look like? Until | very recently no one could say one way or another. Technically we can't see individual atoms since there are no microscopes powerful enough. Since technology improves all the time, it may aot be long before we can actually see a whole atom through a special microscope. Even though scientists cannot see atoms with microscopes, they have developed ‘ways to detect them and learn about them. Atoms are made up of three basic parts: protons, neutrons, and electrons. There is a core or nucleus, and an electron cloud. ‘The nucleus is made up of positively charged protons and neutral neutrons. The nucleus is held closely together by electromagnetic force. Protons and neutrons make up the nucleus of the-atom. A cloud of electrons orbits the nucleus. The nogatively charged electrons are bound tothe nucleus and zap around it in a cloud. i Do you remember the cloud of gnats? The gnats would be the electrons zipping | around you; the nucleus. There are different ways atoms are classified. They can | be classified into.clements, like oxygen, carbon, or hydrogen. All of the elements known to man so far can be found on the periodic table. The number of protons | an atom has decided the chemical element. The number of electrons defines the [TURN OVER Con. 379-NM-7007-19. 4 atom’s chemical properties like its melting temperature and boiling point. The study of atoms and. tiny particles that. are even smaller is called quantum méchanics. Scientists stil] have much to leern about atoms. Maybe you will enter the study of quantum mechanics and find a brand new element. Maybe they'll even name it after you! Questions: 1. What are atoms ? 2 2, What does the word ‘Atomos' mean in old Greck language ? 2 3. The author begins this article by comparing a cloud of gnats to an atom. 2 Give reasons. 4, What do the gnats represent? What does the person walking through the gnat 2 represent ? 5. (a) Write a summary of the following passage: 7 Every day, thousands and millions of cup of tea are consumed around the globe. ‘The ancient Chinese insisted that tea was good for making the bones feel lighter. In seventeenth-century London, Garraway's Coffee House advertised tea as being good for headaches, kidney stones, dropsy and sleepiness. It indeed gives so much pleasure while doing so little harm. It is thought that tea was first grown in China about two thousand years ago and reached Japan in the sixth century. It was introduced in Europe in 1610 when traders of the Dutch East India Company returned from Java with chests of leaves. In the Netherlands, it was sold at chemist's shops. In New England, it cost up to % 900 a kilo, so the people boiled it thoroughly, drank it bitter, and then ate the leaves also with butter and salt. Teas from high altitudes are the most priced since they grow more slowly and develop more distinctive flavours. Apart from the Darjeeling, the best Indian teas are the Nilgiris from the mountains of the South West and the strong. pungent Assams from the northeast. : (>) Write a short note on the advantages of technical data in: business world. 5 [TURNOVER Con. 379-NM-7007-19. 6 (c) Read the following poem carefully and answer the questions given below : Gather-ye rose buds.while ye may, Old time is still a-flying: And this same flower that smiles today, Tomorrow will be dying. An emotion can be either pleasant or unpleasant, An individual also may have a mixture of both pleasant and unpleasant emotions. People enjoy fecling unpleasant emotions, such pleasant emotions as love, happiness, and worry, and grief. However, people are sometimes not fully aware of their own emotions. Althought most people believe they know what aan emotions is, psychologists have not yet agreed on a difinition that applies to both human beings and other animals. Individuals communicate most of their emotions by means of words, a variety of other sounds, facial expression, and gestures. For example, anger causes many people to frown, make a fist, and yell. People leam ways of showing some of their emotions from members of their society, though heredity may determent some emitional behaviour. Research has shown that different isolated peoples show emotions by means of similar facial expressions. Even children who are born blind have facial expressions like those of sighted children. gitar aad) Saar aie BIT SA. shat aearcia orm aren cartes Pat dare. oral oer TET Bae weiter dis ara ae. stem alt eerwet A Sear wT Aer HAR sil RB SORT BT eR VPTONTGRNHTA Mea, ToTTEM ake Gee set ara] ora.
