Minster, NAZAA, ARRL. Chel Executive Officer, na2aa@arriong Second Century Farewell, 2022 We hardly knew you! It's just natural as we get older that time seems to fly by faster with each progressive year, but 2022 went by remarkably fast. As | now do each December, let me reflect on some of the things that ARRL accomplished over the past year. First and foremost, we retumed in a big way to in-person events. We held the ARRL National Convention at Orlando Hamcation® in February, and it was very well attended. in May, Dayton Hamvention® was back to its fighting weight with the crowds retuming, and living upto its bling as the largest annual gathering in amateur radio, We also enjoyed the large crowds and had great engagement with members at SEA-PAC (Oregon) in June, the Huntsville Hamfest (Ala- ‘bama) and Northeast HamXposition (Massachusetts) in ‘August, and Pacificon (California) in October. These events are critical to maintaining and building on our commurity, transcending the airwaves to reinforce the relationships, friendships, and knowledge-sharing that form the foundation ‘of our community, ‘The big surprise for me was attending HAM RADIO in Fried- richshafen, Germany. | had never attended, so | wasn't sure ‘what to expect. When we talk about our membership num- bers hovering around 160,000, we often fail to identity that thousands of our members are international! That became immediately apparent once the show was open. Our over- ‘seas members were excited to see us, renewed their mem- berships, and even joined Diamond Club. The line for DXCC. ‘ard checking was remarkably ong throughout the first day of the show. tis clear that ARRL is valued globally for its mission, programs, and products. ‘This year, we made progress in all our areas of outreach, including Field Services, EmComm, Education and Learning, land even social media. We've continued to build strong rela~ tionships with the YouTubers who have a presence in ama- teurradio. The ARRL Lab continues to evolve with new staff, the Clean Signal intative, and our ongoing development of the station of the future, the ARRL Radio Laboratory — W1HQ. We have big plans for expanding the Teachers Insti- tute and attending national conferences for teachers to bring ‘amateur radio into more classrooms and youth experiences, bolstering our commitment to STEM and STEAM education ‘opportunities, and our development of the next generation of radio technologists and communicators, Inthe spring, we chipped away at the aging information sys- tems portfolio at ARRL by replacing our membership system that was over 2 decades old, Trying to weave new technolo- les with old is never easy, and the hyperbole that blasted ‘ut into social media of course did not reflect the reality of the planning and training for, and implementation of, the system. We have more systems that require attention, most ‘especially our website. We are a small organization, and large-scale projects are challenging, But as our outstanding Member Services team showed us for many weeks, keeping a positive attitude and taking on the challenges of the day professionally and with good humor are what keep us thriving To that end, we continue to work on the culture of ARRL HQ, the ARRL Board, and the community a large. This is impor- tant fora few reasons. First and foremost, whatever the hobby is to you — a pastime, a form of public service, a tech- nical pursuit — itis something all of us do as an avocation, Nobody wants to stay engaged with something that brings dissatisfaction, conflict, and angst into their lives. | gat email from those hams as they leave. | recently spoke at Pacificon during our ARRL Member Forum. What did I see as | looked ‘out into the audience? Kids! Young hams! Messaging to young people cannot be aorid and offensive. Our behavior — in person, online, and on the air —must reflect a commu- rity committed to welcoming others, and growing. Let our association as ARAL members reflect the very best of ama- tour radio: who we are, and what we do. This last year, we have laid a significant foundation for what's ahead. As we rol into 2023, you are going to see a bright spotlight focused on volunteerism in amateur radio, and especially ARRL. We have reached a point of crisis in our ‘community regarding the pool of volunteers who are ready, willing, and able to fillmportant posts — most especially our ‘Section Manager positions. We know the challenges of serving as a volunteer. In many ways itis thankless, but we also know itis extremely rewarding. The positive feedback we get every day from members, as well as the energy of Working alongside our volunteers, powers us at HQ. Next year, | am going to ask you — all year long — to reach just one rung higher. If you'e in a club, serve the club. If you serve the club, lead the club If you lead the club, volunteer for a position or appointment in the ARRL Field Organization. I you're already there, run for Section Manager, Vice Director, or even Director If there are circumstances that preclude that, then please consider joining Diamond Club and put your money to work in the ARAL General Fund, helping to guarantee the future of ARAL and amateur radio, Be radio active, get other people active, and be that shining light in these coming dark days of winter. Schoenfeld, WBXY, bschoenfeld@arrLorg Member Spotlight Yigal, K2EFG, and Marnita, KD2MVR, Rechtman Yigal Rechtman, K2EFG, got his start in radio while he was a teenager living (ona communal farm in Israel. An ‘American ham started a club on the farm, and Yigal got interested in DXing, ‘but his ham radio pursuits were put aside when he moved to the US in his, carly 20s. When Morse code was {dropped from the testing requirements, that prompted Yigal to test for, and receive, his Technician license in 2008, s00n followed by his General, and he's, ‘now an Extra, ‘Yigal, a self-described "Brooklyn boy,” ‘would operate in parks, and people ‘would stop and ask, “What are you doing this for? What is it good for?” “Finally, I formulated an answer” Yigal said. “I said, ‘Well i's a public service. Its good for emergency situations And 8 | was answering them, | was answering myselt” Yigal became involved in emergency ‘communications through New York City ARES®, When Hurricane Sandy hit in 2012, Yigal participated inthe net work operations ofthe Red Cross and sill values that real-world lesson in ham radio's importance. Public Service Power Couple Yigal crossed paths with Marita in 2015, and thir intial connection was work related, Mamita, who was an attomey for UPS at the te, attended a lecture Yigal gave on forensic accountng for lawyers. Yigal’ boss suggested that he meet with Marnita to 00 their accounting fm might be Able to work with UPS, Though that dldnit come to pass, Yigal and Mar- rita‘ relationship grew. Ham raco ig- red in rom the start — Marita was licensed in 2016. ‘The couple, who married in 2018, even- tually moved to Fort Lee, New Jersey, tobe close to Marnita’s family. The ‘move led to them volunteering at the borough's Office of Emergency Man- agement (OEM). They completed the necessary certification course, and Contributed to developing communica tions solutions specific to Fort Lee's location on a ridge. Yigal was also responsible for some training and activ- ities. “We also did events, lke serving at a high-speed bike race,” Marnita said. “That hands-on type of training was the best kind, because you see the importance of what you're doing” Meeting the Challenge Though Yigal and Marnita make sure to have fun with aco (they bring gear on their annual trips to lsrae, where they operate mobile and portable), they are passionate aboutham radio’ role as a pubic service. “Our society is facing vulnerabilities, ‘our communications infrastructure is facing vuinerabiites,” Marita said. You need a large swath of people who know how to turn on a radio and get on a frequency.” {As for how to recruit those large num- bers, that's a question much of the ham community wrestles with. "Ham radio has to continue to grow,” Marnita said, "And ifthe community's population is ‘not growing, that undermines the con- tinued success of the hobby,” Inhelping to ensure that success, Mar- rita and Yigal believe i's important to {ind ways to promote ham radio to demographics that are underrepre- sented in the hobby. “If you look at it ike creating a business,” Yigal said, “you ‘map your services to your channels to your target. Where's the watering hole for young people? For women of color? Where do you go to reach them?” ‘The Rechtmans’ ideas for making ham radio approachable are based in basic, shared things: communicating with ‘ther people, and caring for your com- munity. “Things people understand and hhave an interest in," Marita said, This idea was proved a few years ago, when Yigal gave a licensing class and ‘many neighborhood kids attended. Fort Lee's population is nearly one-quarter Korean, and the majority ofthe kids participating were of Asian and Asian- ‘American ethnicity. “I think they had a sense of, ‘ets do this for the commu- nity" Yigal saa. “Excitement can be built, it can be har- essed,” Mamita said. “We need to ‘emphasize the need for a strong popu- lation, so that when we are vulnerable, \we can step up to the challenge.” December 2022 13 ARRL’s mission: To advance the art, science, and enjoyment of Amateur Radio, Guide to Member Benefits ARRL Online | wwwarrl.org/myarrl Create an online ARRL Member account, and get access to members-only benefits.
