Introduce

Bia: Environmental issues consist in harmful effects of human activities in the

environment. There are various environmental issues but we are going to
dedicate our presentation to pollution. There are 3 major types of pollution: air
pollution, water pollution and soil pollution. We will be referring their main
causes, their consequences and what has already been done to prevent each
of them.

Air pollution

Maria: The contamination of the indoor or outdoor environment by any

chemical, physical or biological agent that modifies the natural characteristics of
the atmosphere results in air pollution. Common sources of air pollution are
household combustion devices, motor vehicles, factories and forest fires. There
are different levels of air pollution around the world. For example, in places like
North America the air has a great quality. However, in places like India, there
are dense layers of pollution gases that make it really hard to breath. These
layers can lead to people having severe health problems just as asthma and
bronchitis, pneumonia, coughs, irritations and allergies. In more severe cases,
air pollution can cause damage to the immune, nervous and reproductive
systems, hypertension, cancer and even death.

Bia: To prevent air pollution, in 2013, the EU stablished some goals. Reduce
the number of premature deaths and sicknesses caused by air pollution and
reduce pollution pressure on ecosystems and biodiversity. To help achieving
them, the European Union decided to use some tools, such as discussions
between EU countries and the Commission on how to achieve cleaner air and
financial support for EU countries to implement clean air related policy.

Water pollution

Bia: When harmful substances contaminate a stream, river, lake, ocean, or

other body of water, degrading water quality and rendering it toxic to humans or
the environment, we are facing water pollution. The main causes of water
pollution are agricultural, industrial and domestic activities and contamination by
corpse waste. This leads to water contamination, making it unfit for
consumption. If someone consumes this water, it can lead to health problems,
such as: amebiases, cholera and hepatitis A. To prevent water pollution the
governments have already stablished some laws, such as the prohibition of
industrial waste disposal. Whoever breaks the law is punished with a high fine.
Soil pollution

Maria: Soil pollution is defined as the presence of toxic chemicals in soil, in high
enough concentrations to pose a risk to human health and/or the ecosystem.
Activities such as intensive farming, with the use of chemicals, pesticides and
fertilizers, mining, military activities and the FAO highlights industry, are one of
the main reasons that lead to this problem. Soil pollution causes damage to
health, provoking illnesses, poorer harvests, reducing the amount and quality of
them and climate changes, releasing tons of CO2 to the atmosphere. Four
essencial things you can do to prevent soil pollution are: limit the consumption
of material goods, recycle as much as possible, reduce the amount of plastic
used and conserve energy.

Conclude

Bia: To conclude, we hope that you understand how important it is to help our
planet, by taking action, not just speaking.
