Scanned with CamScanner Preface MORE MUSIC FOR SIGHT SINGING, like its companion volume, MUSIC FOR SIGHT SINGING, is an anthology compiled to furnish the student with a large number of melodies for the development of skill in sight singing. Also as in the earlier volume, these examples are drawn from music literature representing, all historical eras and a wide variety of composers, as well as a variety of folk music from many parts of the world. There is no duplication of musical materials from one volume to the other. ‘The present volume is characterized by several differences in organization and content when compared with the earlier volume. The collection of sight singing melodies is divided into six large sections, in each of which the melodies range from.easy to more difficult levels. However, these melodies do not contain * the minute grading of both thythmic and melodic elements found in the twenty- two chapters of MUSIC FOR SIGHT SINGING. These elements are compre- hensively covered in the present volume, but the less stringent organization allows the instructor more freedom to choose from those sections, or from material within sections, best suited to his or her particular preference in sight singing pedagogy. ‘New in MORE MUSIC FOR SIGHT SINGING are two extensive series of thythmic reading drills, approached both as rhythmic solos and rhythmic duets. Scanned with CamScanner vi The examples in cach of these series, unlike the melodies, are carefully graded. They present onc rhythmic problem at a time and progress from very simple to advanced levels of difficulty. Each series presents those rhythmic problems found in its following collection of melodic lines. Also new are three series of melodic exercises written for this volume. The first series presents scalar patterns only, in all major and minor keys, to precede and facilitate the singing of melodies from literature. The second illus- trates melodic usages of chromatically altered chords. The third series presents pitch and interval problems typical of those to be found in much of the music of the twentieth century. Additionally, separate chapters present special materials: (1) canons and duets from the common practice period; (2) medieval and renaissance music (ingle line and duet) together with modal folk music; (3) music of the twentieth century, including contemporary jazz; and (4) music from non-Western cultures. Music at all levels of difficulty may be found in cach of these sections, providing the student at any point in his or her sight singing development with suitable materials from these important areas of music literature. Scanned with CamScanner part l Music of the Common Practice Period*: Diatonic Melodies Part 1 consists of examples of melodies ranging from the easiest to the moderately diffi- cult, Included are both rhythmic drills and melodies from the literature of music, folk tunes, and melodies by composers of the period, The examples incorporate the following theoretical materials. Rhythm: Simple time — the beat note and its division into two parts and into four parts. - Compound time — the beat note and its division into three parts and into six parts. Syncopation. , Melody: All diatonic intervals. Treble, bass, alto, and tenor clefs.
