A. Equations
1. Definition
• An equation is a mathematical statement that states two algebraic expressions are
equal. Some examples in one variable, 𝑥, are 3𝑥 + 2 = 4, 𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 = 𝑥 + 1 and
2𝑥−1
= 1 − 𝑥.

• To solve an equation in one variable means to find the values of that variable that
make the equation true. These values are called solutions or roots of the equation.
