Active v/s Passive Voice

Active voice – The importance is on WHO or WHAT performs the ACTION

The firefighter put out the fire

AGENT + ACTION + OBJECT

The fire fighter is the AGENT that performs the ACTION (PUT OUT)

The fire is the OBJECT that receives the effect of the ACTION

Passive voice – The importance is on the ACTION

The fire was put out

OBJECT + ACTION

Passive voice : BE + VERB IN PAST PARTICIPLE


The first verb indicates the TIME of the sentence

 Embedded questions

An embedded question is a type of question which is included within another


question or sentence. Sentences that include embedded question usually begins with
common introductory phrases like:

o Could you tell me…?


o I don’t know…
o I’d like to know…
o I’m not sure…
o Do you know…?
o I wonder…
o Would you mind explaining/telling…?
o Let’s ask…
o Can you remember…?
o I can’t remember…
o Can you tell me…?
o I was wondering…
o I have no idea…

Direct question Embedded question

Where is the train station? Do you know where the train station is?

What are you going to do tomorrow? Tell me what you are going to do tomorrow.

Does she work? Could you tell me if she works?

How often did they play soccer in school? I wonder how often they played soccer in school
