ANGELS LAKE

(FOLKTALE)

Long time ago, there is a handsome young man. His name is Awang Sukma. Awang Sukma
wanders up to the middle of the jungle. He was amazed to see a wide variety of life in the
forest. He built a tree house in a very large tree limb. He lived in the forest in harmony and
peace. After a long stay in the forests, Awang Sukma was appointed ruler of that area and got
the title "Datu". Once a month, Awang Sukma get around his territory, and he arrived in a
clear lake. The lake is under a shady tree with many fruits. The birds and insects lives
happily.

"Hmm, how beautiful this lake! This forest has extraordinary beauty" Datu Awang
Sukma wondered.

The next day, when Datu Awang Sukma was blowing his flute, he heard the noise of a low in
the lake. On the sidelines of the fissured rock pile, Datu Awang Sukma peering toward the
lake. Awang Sukma astonishment when he saw 7 beautiful girls are playing water. "Could
they be the fairies?" thought Awang Sukma. Seven beautiful girls was not aware if they are
being watched and ignoring their shawls used to fly, scattered around the lake. One shawl is
located near Awang Sukma. "Wow, this is a good opportunity to get a scarf in that tree,"
muttered Datu Awang Sukma.

Hearing the sound of the leaves, the girls were shocked and immediately took the shawl each.
When the seventh daughter wants to fly, it turns out there is a princess who could not find his
clothes. She has been abandoned by the sixth sisters. At that time, Datu Awang Sukma
immediately come out of hiding. "Do not worry princess, I will help as long as the princess
refused to live with me," pleaded Datu Awang Sukma. Youngest daughter still in doubt

the baby. Datu Awang Sukma was stunned to see what happened. He immediately came over
and apologized for the actions that improperly hide shawl Youngest Daughter. Datu Awang
Sukma realize that separation is inevitable. "Kanda, dinda Kumalasari please guard it well,"
said the youngest daughter told Datu Awang Sukma. "View Datu Awang Sukma staring

THE BARUKLINTING DRAGON


( FOLKLORE FROM CENTRAL JAVA )

A long time ago, there was a giant dragon. His name was Baruklinting. One day, one of the
gods asked him to take nine shepherds as an offering for the gods. Then Baruklinting went to
a mountain. He opened his big mouth everyday. He hoped that shepherds would enter his big
mouth. In the village, ten shepherds took their cows to the grass field on the mountain. They
didn’t know there was a dragon. One of the shepherds was very skinny and dirty. His friends
always made fun of him. The skinny shepherd never got angry. He just kept quiet and left his
friends every time they laughed at him. It was a very hot day. All shepherds were very tired.
They wanted to find a cool place to rest. The skinny shepherd had already found a nice place
to rest. It was under a big tree. The place was cool so he did not feel hot anymore. His friends
were jealous.
“Let’s steal his place,” said one of them.
“Yes! Let’s do it!” other shepherds agreed.
They took some mud and threw it to the skinny shepherds. The skinny shepherd was so sad.
Still, he did not get angry. He just left them and walked
away.

“Ha ha ha go now! You skinny boy!” they laughed at him.

Suddenly the sky became dark. There was a thunder and lightning. Heavy rain began to fall.
The shepherds did not want to get wet. They had to find a better place. They finally found a
big cave. The cave had sharp rocks inside it. All shepherds did not know that the cave was
actually the mouth of the giant dragon. Yes, it was Baruklinting’s mouth! When all shepherds
were inside the ‘cave’, suddenly one of them pushed the skinny shepherd away.

“Go out! You don’t belong here! It’s only for the big boys!”

"But it was raining outside,” said skinny shepherd.

"I don’t care!” then they pushed him.

Right after the skinny shepherd was outside the cave, it suddenly closed! Yes, Baruklinting
just finished his job to get nine shepherds for the gods. When the skinny shepherds saw the
cave closed, he ran away! He ran as fast as he could. He then told the villagers about the cave
and the dragon. The villagers then went to the mountain to kill the dragon. But when they
arrived, the dragon had already gone. From that day on, the village was named Kesongo
Village. Songomeant nine for the nine shepherds who were eaten by Baruklinting Dragon

BANTA BARENSYAH THE HONESTY FLUTIST


(FOLKTALE)
Long ago, there lived a boy named Banta Barensyah with his mother in a village in Aceh.
Their life is very poor. Their job is just winnowing rice husk in a rice mill. Their wages were
only a handful of rice. One day there was no work in rice mills so that they could not eat. So
Bareansyah's mother, go ask for rice to her wealthy brother 'Jacob'. But instead of rice
obtained, but shout. Not far from their village, there is a kingdom which king was very wise.
He has a beautiful daughter named 'Putri Terus Mata'. She just wanted to get marry if there is
a man who can find her clothes of gold and suasa.

The desire of the princess reached the Berensyah ears.

"Let me look for that clothes Mom. I'll sail to the country side. I will be aboard Uncle
Jacob," said Barensyah pleaded.

With a heavy heart, his uncle let him participate. Armed with a flute and a piece of taro
leaves he went. Up in the middle of the sea he was dropped by his uncle on Barensyah
demand. He immediately held his taro leaves and like magic he could float. Gusts of wind
bringing Berensyah to the destination. After arriving at the land he immediately looking for a
weaver and convey the intent why he came.

Barensyah ask the weaver to make the cloth of gold. Weaver just look Berensyah in disbelief.

"With what will you pay me?" ask the weaver.

"I'll pay for it with a song


who I blow from this flute." said Barensyah.

Barensyah began blowing his flute, and weavers began to work. Clothes of gold was finally
completed. Barensyah then sailed back with his taro leaves. In the middle of the sea, he met
with the Jacob's ship.

Jacob saw a flash in Berensyah flute, he knew it was a the golden clothes. Jacob robs the
golden clothes and throw Barensyah to The sea. The sea waves bringing Barensyah to the
beach. Fortunately, there are a couple who find and caring Barensyah until cured. After
Barensyah recovered, he excused himself to the old couple.

Berensyah went back to his village. When he got there, he heard that his uncle will be marry
the princess. Barensyah angry, because he was get the golden clothes. Meanwhile, when
Jacob's wedding will be held, suddenly came a hawk.

"Kiik, kiiik ... the golden clothing, belongs Barensyah," said the eagle.
The palace became crowded, Jacob eventually imprisoned and Banta Barensyah live happily
with his mother and Princess Terus Mata.
JAKA TARUB and NAWANG WULAN

Jaka Tarub was a handsome young man. He was very popular in the village. Many young
girls fell in love with him. However Jaka Tarub thought that they were not beautiful enough
to be his wife. That's why he was still single. He wanted to have a very beautiful wife.As
always. 

Jaka Tarub went to the forest to collect some woods. Suddenly he heard some noise from the
waterfall. He was curious. The noise was from the girls taking a bath in the waterfall.Slowly,
Jaka Tarub walked to the area. When he arrived there, he saw seven beautiful girls taking a
bath. He was really amazed by their beauty. After they were finished, the girls slowly took
their shawls. Amazingly after they wore the shawls, they flew to the sky.

"They were not humans. They were fairies!" said Jaka Tarub suprized.
After that Jaka Tarub went home. He was very restless. He was still thinking about those
seven beautiful girls.
On the next day, Jaka Tarub then decided to go back to the waterfall. When those fairies were
taking a bath, he stole one of their shawls. And that made one fairy could not fly back to the
sky.She cried.
Jaka Tarub then approached her. "What's wrong? Why are you crying?"
"I lost my shawl. I cannot go back home. All my sisters have left me. My name is
Nawang Wulan. I will give you anything if you can find my shawl." said the fairy.

"I'll help you. But if we can't find it, you can stay at my house. You can be my wife," said
Jaka Tarub.

Then
Jaka Tarub pretended to look for the shawl. And of course they could not find it. After that
they went to Jaka Tarub's home. Later they got married.They had a baby girl. They had a
happy life. They always had enough rice to eat. They did not have to work hard like their
neighbors. It was because Nawang Wulan used her magic in cooking. One day, Jaka Tarub
asked her about the magic. Nawang Wulan did not tell him the secret and asked him not to
open the cooking pan's lid. She said that if Jaka Tarub opened the lid, they had to work hard
to get a lot of rice to cook.

One day, Jaka Tarub was really curious. He then opened the cooking pan's lid. He saw there
was only a small portion of rice to cook. When she got home, Nawang Wulan knew that Jaka
Tarub had opened the lid. She was angry because she already lost the magic in cooking. Now
she had to take a big portion of rice to cook.

Slowly there was not enough rice in the silo. And when Nawang Wulan wanted to take the
last portion of rice, she found her shawl. Jaka Tarub hide the shawl in the silo.

Nawang Wulan was really happy. She then said, "I will go home now. Take care of our
daughter. When there is full moon, take her out of the house and I'll come to get her."

Nawang Wulan then flew to the sky. Jaka Tarub was really sad. And to keep the promise,
Jaka Tarub always went out of the house with his daughter when there was full moon. But
Nawang Wulan never came back.

WANEBAKA | THE SON OF TUNDE

In Bali, there was a man called Tunde. He had been married for 10 years but had no child. So
he was very happy when his wife got pregnant. But after a few months, his wife's belly
returned to its normal size. It happened many times and he asked a shaman for a help but the
shaman could not do anything about it.
One day, when he’s pregnant wife was washing at the river, she felt something falling down
from her body to the river, but she ignored it and kept washing. After that, her belly resized to
the normal size.
At home, she told it to her husband. “Maybe gods don’t want us to have a child,” Tunde said.
As usual, they let it pass, and for the next 10 years Tunde’s wife didn’t get pregnant anymore.
10 years later, women who were washing at the river heard somebody’s singing but they
didn’t look anyone around.
"O.. washing women..

That Wanebaka has grown up..
And want to be circumcised soon"
The scared women told Tunde what they had experienced. First Tunde ignored it. It occurred
again and finally he attended a simple circumcising ritual, with no boy is actually
circumcised.
15 years later, the washing women heard somebody’s singing again. This time they didn’t get
afraid.
"O.. washing women..
Tell my father Tunde..
That Wanebaka has grown up..
And want to be married"

Tunde then looked for a girl who would be a bride for his unexisting son. He paid for the
bride and arranged the marriage. He came to the river and said, “Whoever you are, if you’re
really my son, come on the day of your wedding.”
At the wedding ceremony, a guest saw a snake crawling to Tunde’s house and everyone ran
away in a panic. The snake got so disappointed and disappeared in the bush.
A few years later, the song was heard again at the river and Tunde did the same thing as
before but this time he threatened the bride that he would kill her if she ran away.
At the ceremony, the snake appeared again and everyone ran away including Tunde and his
wife. The bride stood where she was, waiting for her death. The snake’s tail touch her toe,
and it went to a room. The bride followed the snake. The snake drank a bottle of tuak and got
drunk. While it was sleeping, its skin removed from the body. The bride gathered it and
burned it outside the house. The ash was buried. When she returned to the room she found a
handsome man sleeping in the bed. “Now you won’t become a snake anymore, and I’ll be
your loyal wife,” she said.

SI LORENG | THE STORY OF PANYALAHAN VILLAGE

Long time ago in Tasikmalaya, West Java, lived a young couple. They were farmers. They
lived happily with their baby. The couple also had some animals. One of them was a tiger,
they call him Loreng. Loreng is very obedient to the couple.

When the couple went to work on the rice field, the tiger looked after their baby. As usual,
the couple went to the rice field. Before they left, they asked the tiger to look after their baby.
“Loreng, We will go to the field now. Look after our baby, okay?” The tiger nodded.

So, the couple went to the field. They worked from morning until afternoon. When the couple
at work, the tiger welcomed them. The tiger acted differently. He wagged his tail and rubbed
his body to the couple’s legs. He looked very happy. The husband became suspicious.

“Why does Loreng behave strangely? He does not act as usual?” ask the wife.

"Yes my dear, it's strange. What is going on?" said the husband.

"Darling! Look..!" hte wife shouted."his mouth besapttered fresh blood."

The husband looked at the tiger carefully. He was shocked. The tiger’s mouth was full of
blood. Then he remembered his baby. He thought the tiger had eaten the baby.

“Why is your
mouth full of blood?” he asked the tiger.

“You must have done something bad to my baby! Have you killed him? Why did you
do that?” he was very panicked.

Loreng shake his head for the response he did not do that.

The husband took his knife and killed the tiger in anger and madness. Loreng immediately
fall dead.

"Darling! Let's Hurry go home!" said the wife.

They runing to go home, then they both entered the house. They were shocked. They looked
at each other. Their baby was sleeping peacefully in his cradle. He was not eaten by the tiger.
Quickly, the wife took the baby and kissed him. The baby woke up. He opened his eyes and
smiled. The couple found a very large snake under the cradle. The snake was dead and full of
blood. 

“Oh, my wife,” the husband said.

“We have done a terrible thing. The tiger is not guilty! Look at the dead snake. The tiger must
have killed him. He had saved our baby, but I killed him. Oh, my God! What have I done? I
am so sorry. Forgive me, my dear tiger. Forgive me, please?” The couple felt very guilty.
They have killed their faithful tiger. It all happened because they did not check the baby first
before they killed the tiger. Since then, the couple’s village was called Penyalahan Vilage
"Panyalahan Vilage". The word Panyalahan derives from the word “nyalahan”, which means
“wrong guess”.

According to them who coming from countryside of panyalahan, until now any weapon is
immune to kill tiger, this matter happened because countryside of panyalahan have happened
harrowing event, that is a tiger which not guilty murdered  because wrong guess.

Moral Message : don't to be reckless, think carefully before act.


PUTRI KEMUNING
( FOLKTALE FROM EAST JAVA )

Putri Kemuning and her mother live in a jungle. They are poor. Putri Kemuning always
helps her mother collect woods in the jungle and sell them in the market.

In the jungle, Putri Kemuning has animal friends.


One day, Putri Kemuning's mother is ill. Putri Kemuning is very sad because she does not
have enough money to buy medicine. She then collects many woods and plans to sell them.
She wants to spend the money to buy medicine.

While She collects the woods, Putri Kemuning meets her animal friend, the rabbit. He is
worried because Putri Kemuning looks very sad.
Putri Kemuning tells the problem to the rabbit.

"I can help you. Take this ring and then sell it," says the rabbit.

"Is this your ring?" asks Putri Kemuning.

"No. This is the King Ngarancang Kencono's ring. I fell when he washunting here," answer
the rabbit.

Putri
Kemuning hesitates. She really needs the money but it is not her ring. Finally she says, "No, I
have to return this ring to the king."

Putri Kemuning then goes to see the king at his palace.

"What is your name and what is your purpose here?" says the king.

"My name is Putri Kemuning. I want to return your ring," answer Putri Kemuning.

"Thank you very much. Now, I want to give you something. What do you want?" ask the
King.

"I don't anything. I just want to go home. My mother is very ill," says Putri Kemuning.
"You are a very kind girl. Now, take this gift," The King give something to Putri
Kemuning.

And then Putri Kemuning goes home. When she arrives, Putri Kemuning tells her mother
about the king's ring. Her mother is very proud of her. When they open the gift, they see a
bag full of gold coins. They are very happy because they can buy medicine and buy some
food.

Moral message : We should be able to distinguish, where is right and wrong. And don't
take something that is not our right

TELAGA WARNA ( Color Lake)


(folktale from West Java)

The king of a famous kingdom in Cipanas, West Java, is very wise man. He has a beautiful
daughter. The king and queen love their daughter so much.But all their love is not enough for
the princess. Even though they give her everything, she is not happy. All the jewelries that
they have are not enough for her. She is not satisfied with her gorgeous look either.
The princess then has an idea. She plans to put all the jewelries that they have in every single
hair in her head. She wants to be the most beautiful girl in the world.

So the princess goes to see her mother and father and tell them about her plan. She is very
sure they will not say no.
The king is surprised to hear about his daughter plan. He tries to convince her that her plan is
not proper.

"My Daughter, the beauty of a princess is not measured by her clothes or by the jewelry she
is wearing, but by her attitude. It's not that we
don't love you, but what will people think if you go through with your plan?" said the king.

The princess is shocked to hear that. So she runs to her room to get her jewelry box. Then she
returns to her parents.

She screams: "You are so miserly. Here, I am returning the every single jewelry you ever
gave me."

She throes her jewelry box to her father.

The wise king is outraged seeing his daughter did.


"You are ungrateful daughter!"

Suddenly, the floor of the palace erupts and water pours out from the crack. In a matter of
second the palace if flooded, drowning the ungrateful princess and her jewelry. The palace
then replace by a lake.

The lake always reflects multiple colors to its surrounding. Some say the colors come from
the princess's jewelry. The lake is known as Telaga Warna that means colorful lake.

AJI SAKA

In ancient times, there was a kingdom called Medang Kamulan be governed by a king named
Prabu Dewata Cengkar the wild and like to eat human. Every day the king ate a man who
brought by Patih Jugul Muda. A small portion of people who worry and fear flee secretly to
other regions.

In the village Medang Kawit have a young man named Aji Saka who incredible , diligent and
good-hearted. One day, Aji Saka successfully helping old man by two men beaten it. Old man
who eventually was appointed by Aji Saka fact that refugees from Medang Kamulan. Hear
the story of the savagery Prabu Dewata Cengkar, Aji Saka intend to help people Medang
Kamulan. With wear turban in the head Aji Saka

Travel to Medang Kamulan not smooth, Aji Saka got combat for seven days with seven-night
watchman forest devil, because Aji Saka refused slaves made by the devil watchman for ten
years before the forest was allowed to pass. But because he's incredibly, Aji Saka
successfully avoid bursts of fire from the devil. After Aji Saka praying, yellow rays from the
sky strike the demons from the forest and the devil died.

Aji Saka arrived in the quiet Medang Kamulan. At the palace, Prabu Dewata Cengkar are
angry because the Patih Jugul Muda not bring the victim to the Prabu.
With bold, Aji Saka facing Prabu Dewata Cengkar and submit themselves to eat by Prabu
with exchange land area of turban.

When they are measuring the land upon request Aji Saka, turban continue to sweep so wide
breadth beyond the kingdom Prabu Dewata Cengkar. Prabu angry after knowing Aji Saka
intention is to end tyranny of Prabu Dewata Cengkar.

When Prabu Dewata Cengkar are angry, turban Aji Saka strong wind in the Prabu's body. Aji
Saka throw body Prabu Dewata Cengkar and fell to the south sea and then lost by sea waves.

Then Aji Saka appointed as The King of Medang Kamulan. He brought his father to the
palace. Because the fair government and wise, Aji Saka bring to the Kingdom Medang
Kamulan golden era, era where people live quiet, peaceful, prosperous and safe.
