Lesson Idea - Multimedia

Lesson Title Represent your Class by Representing Systems of Linear Equations.

Content Area Algebra 1, Grade 9

Content Standards MGSE9-12.A.REI.8 Represent a system of linear equations as a single

matrix equation in a vector variable.

Technology Standards Empowered Learner:

Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving,
and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the
learning sciences.
1.c) Students build networks and customize their learning environments in
ways that support the learning process.

Digital Citizen:
Students recognize the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of living,
learning and working in an interconnected digital world, and they act and
model in ways that are safe, legal and ethical.
2.b) Students engage in positive, safe, legal and ethical behavior when
using technology, including social interactions online or when using
networked devices.
2.c) Students demonstrate an understanding of and respect for the rights
and obligations of using and sharing intellectual property.

Knowledge Constructor:
Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct
knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning
experiences for themselves and others.
3.b) Students evaluate the accuracy, perspective, credibility and relevance
of information, media, data or other resources.

Creative Communicator:
Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a variety
of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital media
appropriate to their goals.
6.1) Students choose the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the
desired objectives of their creation or communication.

Integrated Technology Laptop/Computer/Tablet (Provided by the school):

- Students can use these devices to create or edit their video file, as well
as research their topic using academic sites.

A video creation tool and a hosting site:

- Students will use a video creation tool (such as MovieMaker) to create
and edit their video files. Once their project has been completed, they
can publish their work to an online hosting site and share it with their
teacher.

Reference or A Hosting Website (YouTube):

Supporting Resources - YouTube is an example of a hosting website that students can use to
publish their original work or find works created by others.
Video Editor (MovieMaker):
- MovieMaker is an example of software that can be used to create and
edit video files.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Understanding: Students will demonstrate their understanding of any

Levels mathematical topic or concept related to their lesson, by providing relevant
information and explaining the process using their own words.

Applying: Students will apply their knowledge of their chosen topic by

working through example problems. While doing so, they will break down the
process and describe each step being taken.

Creating: Students will create a video or vodcast for the purpose of teaching
any topic or concept of their choosing. This topic will be related to their
current lesson and be pre-approved by their teacher.

Integration Level Level 5: Expansion

Importance of Using a multimedia authoring tool is critical to the project because it allows
Technology users to incorporate different types of media often seen in videos. As a result,
this project couldn’t be created without this technology. Without using this
technology, users would be limited in their ability to create and design video
files. For instance, videos and vodcasts would be less engaging and effective
at conveying information if users couldn’t include media types such as audio,
text, and images to accompany it.

Internet Safety and Since students will have access to the internet, there are potential issues that
Student Privacy could arise concerning internet safety and their privacy online. In order to
minimize the potential risks to both my students and myself, I would have
them use websites and software that were pre-approved by the school. By
doing so, I would be able to ensure that their information wasn’t collected or
stored online. Additionally, I would choose to have my students save their
video files to their computer or on a flash drive, so that they could share it
with me without having to publish their work online. If this wasn’t possible, I
would have my students set their published videos to private, so that they
couldn’t be found or accessed by anyone else online. I would ask that my
students use their own original work exclusively when creating their videos
but would allow them to use outside media (such as music) only if they were
copyright compliant (public domain or creative commons) and were given the
proper attributions.

Universal Design For this activity, students can choose any topic or concept related to their
Rationale current lesson. They will create a video or vodcast that either teaches,
reviews, reinforces/practices, or explains this idea to their peers. Students
can accomplish this in a variety of ways, some examples being traditional
“movie” videos (where they are shown in the video), stop-motion videos, or
video voice-overs. This variety allows students to be creative and choose a
style of video that best represents them. This activity supports and enhances
the learning experience for all students for this reason, since it gives them the
freedom to explore and investigate the content. Additionally, since this activity
is largely student-led, it provides them with the opportunity to engage with the
content on a higher level.
Lesson Idea The teacher will begin by providing instructions to the class regarding their
activity, which is how the project will be introduced. Students will listen and
follow along silently, staying seated until the teacher is done. Once the
teacher has finished explaining the directions and expectations for the day,
students will raise their hands to ask questions or to seek clarification for any
aspect they are confused about. Students will work on their activity
independently but are free to ask the teacher or their peers questions at any
time. They would begin by first choosing a topic, which must be approved by
the teacher before they progress any further. This will be achieved easily,
since the teacher will be walking around the classroom to advise students.
The teacher will give approval as students suggest their chosen topics. This
should take no more than 15 minutes. After all students have had their topic
approved, they will have the rest of their class period to work on their project.
Student learning will be assessed by the teacher, who will be using this time
to observe and monitor students. They will navigate around the classroom to
answer questions and help any student that they suspect might be confused.
Once students have completed their project, they will share it only with
their teacher. If parental consent has been given, the teacher will share each
student’s video with the rest of the class by displaying it on the screen at the
front of the classroom. This helps differentiate learning for two main reasons,
the first being that students get the experience of creating and designing a
video file using their knowledge of the content. The second reason is that
through the work of their peers, students get to experience and engage with a
variety of other topics and concepts that are also related to their lesson. This
is beneficial because they are being exposed to different ways of thinking
about and understanding each topic. This class viewing and discussion is
how the lesson will be concluded. It will also give the teacher the opportunity
to assess the students’ work, thus allowing them to provide more constructive
and personalized feedback. This feedback could also be used to extend
student learning to a higher level by having students use it to revise and re-
submit their project. This revision would require them to add an additional
media type, whether it be animations, pictures, or audio. While they would be
encouraged to create their own original product, they would be allowed to use
outside sources so long as they abided by copyright laws and gave the
proper credits for any work used.

Design Reflection I believe that the activity I created would support and enhance student
learning. This is because the activity encourages students to be active
participants and leaders in their learning experience. This lesson could be
further extended by incorporating additional technology tools that serve to
enhance this project. For instance, this project could be changed to allow for
group collaboration, in which case students would be using technology to
reach out to and advise each other outside of the classroom.
