DEBATE GUIDELINES
MECHANICS
1. The teams will be randomly given a side to defend. The affirmative team will defend the
motion while the opposing team will argue against the motion.
2. The teams will be given twenty (20) minutes to brainstorm and prepare their speeches.
3. Each speaker is given five (5) minutes to deliver their speeches
4. The debate round will begin with the Prime Minister from the affirmative side. The
second speaker, the Leader of Opposition.
5. The next two speakers are the Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Opposition,
respectively.
6. Lastly, the debate will be concluded by the Government Whip and Opposition Whip.
7. The adjudicator is given twenty (20) minutes to deliberate the debate round and to
decide a winner.
ELIMINATIONS AND FINALS
1. Each house must send one (1) team of three (3) debaters.
2. For the elimination round, the four (4) teams will all have a chance to compete in a
debate round with each other.
3. The winning team will gain one (1) point while the losing team gets zero (0).
4. The two teams with the highest accumulated team points will compete for the first and
second places. The other two teams will compete for the third and fourth placers. In the
event of a tie in team points, the average of all individual speaking points will be used to
decide.
5. The overall winners will gain the following points for their houses:
INDIVIDUAL
Arguments and Analysis —— 20%
Evidence —— 20%
Role Fulfillment —— 20%
Organization and Clarity —— 10%
Delivery —— 10%
