Hand Drums!
-Lots of different types
from all over the world

-Today we’re going to


be working with
djembe techniques
from West Africa
1st technique- Bass
-Hit the middle of the drum

-Use the palm of your hand

-Keep your hand on the drum

after you hit it

-Makes a deep boom sound


2nd technique- Slap
-Hit the edge of the drum

-Use the tips of your fingers

-fingers together, not spread out

-Your hand should rebound after hitting,


like a hot stove

-Makes a high pitched sound


3rd technique- Tone
-Hit slightly farther in than you did for
the slap

-Use the middle of your fingers, almost


hit your palm but not quite

-Hand should rebound (hot stove)

-Makes a open sound between a slap


and a bass sound
Ostinato
-an Ostinato is a repeating rhythmic pattern

This is the ostinato we are going to play on the djembe

Come up with your own patterns!
-Just like we did earlier with clapping

-Everyone is going to come up with one


and then the class will repeat it

-Use quarter and eighth notes and rests

-You can use slap, bass, and tones
