1. Let X be a Bernoulli random variable. Compute the E(X 2 ), V (X), and E(X 79 ).

2. Random Filtration of a Poisson Random variable: At a parking facility, the number of vehicles
arriving are given to be from a Poisson distribution with mean λ. Upon arrival, each vehicle (indepen-
dently) is randomly parked either in the parking lot A or in the parking lot B with equal probability
(1/2). Let M be the number of vehicles parked in the parking lot A. Find

a. PMF for M .

b. Does M follows a Poisson distribution?

c. E[M ] and V [M ].

3. Non-random Filtration of a Poisson Random variable: Consider the problem described in the
previous question. However, now consider a case when upon arrival, each vehicle is alternatively
parked in the parking lots A and B, starting with the parking lot A. That is, the first vehicle is parked
in A, second in B, third in A, and so on. Let M be the number of vehicles parked in the parking lot
A. Find

a. pmf for M .

b. Does X follows a Poisson distribution? Why not (is this process memory less)?

c. E[M ] and V [M ].

d. Is M a random variable? Check if pi = 1, where pi = P r[M = i] for i = 0, 1, · · · n?

4. In the world series, there are two baseball teams the American and the National League team. The
series ends when the winning team wins 4 games. Assume that the teams are evenly matched and the
probability that a particular team wins a particular game is 0.5. What is the probability that the world
series will last
(a) 4 games ? (b) 5 games?

5. Five brothers and their wives decide to have children until each family has two female children. What
is the PMF of X, where x = the total number of male children born to the brothers? What is E(X)?

6. The average number of matches won by a team is 2 matches per month. What is the probability that
there will be 3 wins in the next month?

7. The average number of patient arriving can be modeled by the Poisson process with a rate of parameter
of five per hour.

a. What is the probability that exactly four arrivals occur during a particular hour?

b. What is the probability that at least four arrivals occur during a particular hour?

c. Expected number of people arriving during a 30-minutes period?

Q8. Two tennis professionals are scheduled to play a match. The winner is the first player to
win three sets in a total that cannot exceed five sets. The event that A wins any one set is
independent of the event that A wins any other set. The probability that A wins any one set
is equal to 0.6. Let X be the total number of sets played in the match; i.e. X=3, 4, 5. Prepare
a table for pmf of X and find the expected number of sets required to complete the match.
Use moment generating functions to compute Var(X).
