HOT IN-PLACE RECYCLING OF 29R RUNWAY OF NEHRABAD

AIRPORT IN IRAN
Kavussi, A

Abstract. Mehrabad International Airport is the most trafficked airport in Iran. It

has two thirty years old runways. Combination of both air traffic loadings and aging
have caused these to deteriorate in time. A detailed investigation has been carried
out on 29R runway of the above airport in order to find out the major defects and
their possible causes. Reduced riding quality and poor skid resistance
characteristics were the main problems to be concerned with. In order to
rehabilitate the runway a pavement recycling process has been applied. This
consisted of a hot in place add-mix recycling of the top 60 mm asphalt surface layer.
Comparison of the roughness data before and after the rehabilitation process
showed great improvements. In addition, a questionnaire survey was made to the
pilots operating in Mehrabad. Most of them confirmed the improvements with
regard to both riding quality and safety levels. In fact, the grading adjustment of the
old pavement mix resulted in obtaining a rather textured surfacing too. (A) For the
