Ethics of Accountability, Advocacy, and Competency Essay

Introduction

All hospital staff play an important role in providing the utmost quality of care to

our patients regardless of their job title. As an hospital employee, it can get to a point in your

career where the tasks become mundane which can lead into a lack of accountability in ourselves

and can trickle down to our patient care by also struggling to advocate for our patients. In such a

vital role, we aim to bring awareness to these key areas to provide employees with transparency,

tools for success, and patient-centered focus.

Accountability goes a long way in the healthcare field regardless of your position.

Each employee has an ethical and moral obligation to hold themselves and their coworkers

accountable along with your Healthcare administration team - no one is exempt from this. In

order for the hospital to provide quality, patient-centered care we must be following any current

or upcoming standards that are released to the team as well as attending meetings and training on

the new standards that are presented. In order for everyone to buy in on a new standard we

encourage your feedback and participation.

We are the face of the organization. What we say, do, and hold ourselves says a lot about

our hospital. It is important to remember that this also sets the tone for how this makes us look as

advocates for our patients, coworkers, profession, and organization. Your Healthcare

Administrative teams job is to understand the current state legislation with laws, being actively

involved with the community, and understand how the community views the healthcare

organization at large. This all trickles down into the hospital staff at all levels with new laws that

can be introduced affecting your current position, creating opportunities for staff to help assist in

community involvement activities, and being mindful that you are a role model.

Competency will help us create a bridge between us and the community. This will

give us the opportunity to connect our responsibilities of helping the community. The

competency part isn’t about providers of care but also who supports health care which means

supervisors and even housekeeping! This will help us reach one of our goals which is to provide

patient centered care while applying our quality improvement and using evidence-based practice.

This competence can start with the interview process to ensure we are hiring great staff with the

appropriate and valid credentials that are needed. With the Healthcare Administration team doing

analysis on job titles, duties and responsibilities this will help provide a well rounded

understanding of what each position needs to succeed and provide the best care.

Conclusion

The Healthcare Administration team wants you to understand truly how important

your role is in the organization. We urge you to consider your ethical and moral duty of

providing the best care possible to our patients while also considering your coworkers and

organization. Staff are encouraged to provide feedback to the team or supervisor, attend various

trainings, and get involved with the community. We all have a responsibility in accountability,

advocacy, and competency.
