Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

My situtuation from Module 1 was running a shift, as a shift supervisor. At my .


organization Starbucks, I have been a supervisor for 5 years or so. Overall, I have been
with the company for almost 8 years. My role is to lead my team through each shift by
leading by example there is not one thing I would ask a barista to do that I wouldn’t do or
haven’t done myself. As supervisor I participate in conflict management, ensuring my
team is following standards, procedures, and many other tasks.

The situation that I am going to use for this case analysis is an incident that occurred in
another store and impacted every Starbucks within the corporation. In 2019, in
Philadelphia, there were two men were discriminated against. The two men where falsely
accused resulting in their arrest. Cell phone footage from witnesses allowed the truth to
be told. When that incident took place Starbucks issued an apology on behalf of the
company to the men. A couple weeks later Starbucks closed over 8000 company stores in
the US for a bias training(Starbucks Corporation, 2019)

2) Describe how the human resources of the organization influenced the situation.

Starbucks has always been known as a organization that treats their partners (employees)
with dignity and respect while providing great benefits from health insurance, stocks
grants, and even paying for Arizona State University.When I was first promoted to a
supervisor, it was my first time in a leadership role. I had been a supervisor for two years
when this happened. I have never even had to call the police for any kind of situation.

The human resources of the organization influenced the situation in a few ways. The
store manager was not promoting diversity and inclusion. The men were the only
AfricanAmericans in the store. The store manager called the police on them. The
manager allowed their own personal bias to control their actions. When the manager was

accused of being racist, she denied the claims and made up false information to justify
her behavior.

3) Recommend how you would use the human resources for an alternative course of
action regarding your case.

Starbucks culture is “committed to upholding a culture where inclusion, diversity,


equity, and accessibility are valued and respected.” The organizations created training
specifically to address bias in the workplace, how to identify it, and what to do when it happens.
Regularly offering training on creating a culture of diversity and inclusion. Starbucks could also
include questions about bias in their interviews, before onboarding a new partner.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about this frame.

In this situation, the men asked to use the restroom and were told no. They had
not made a purchase. Knowing Starbucks policies, they did not have to purchase anything
to use the restroom. These individuals were waiting for a business partner to have a
meeting. The political frame is a necessary part of each organization, and Starbucks is no
different. Company leadership makes decisions, and through the corporate structure the
company mission is realized.
Where Starbucks appears to be very successful is through creating a team of
individuals who work there and believe in their mission. I would have allowed these
individuals to use the restroom without calling the police. There was no reason justifying
the store manager`s actions. Everyone has to use the bathroom. Starbucks bathrooms are
open to the public and gender neutral. These individuals did nothing against store policies
or operations. The store manager acted with, be it an unconscious bias or a conscious one.
