Solid State Laser

Components, error analysis, replacement of parts, functional description:

The solid state laser green and blue replace the gas laser in the d-lab.2 (as of SN 1701) and
in the d-lab.2plus
(as of SN 301).

Operation of the solid state laser requires the Software Version 7.80 or higher!

The two heads of the solid state laser are rigidly connected on the color laser recorder.
They can only be replaced together with the color laser recorder.
The red laser diode remains the same.

The "laser power supply" provides -5V and +12V

Supplied by the power supply and mounted on the power supply is the "Laser Remote"
board.
This board is connected with the "Power Monitor board new" and the "Controllers" for the
green and blue solid state lasers.
The "Controllers" have cable connections with the adapter boards green and blue.
The adapter boards connect the green and blue laser heads (on the FLR) with the
controllers.

Spare parts of the FKL assembly:

• CM+9.4150.4000.X Optic module FLR Shimadzu (incl. solid state laser heads green
and blue).
• CM+9.8060.LUF4.X Adapter PCB Shimadzu. See attachment: "Cable Adapter.jpg"
• CM+9.8060.LUF1.X Controller Shimadzu. See attachment: "Controller-adapter-cable-
SSL head.jpg"
• CM+9.8060.LUF3.X Laser power supply Shimadzu. See attachment: "Power
Supply+Laser

• CM+9.8060.2800.X GS (Laser-Remote). See attachment: "Power Supply+Laser
Remote.jpg"
• CM+9.8060.2795.X Power-Monitor PCB new, programmed. See attachment: "PE
SSL.jpg"

All parts can be reached after opening the d-lab front door at the PE side.
The cable adapter boards are an exception.
These are mounted on the back of the print engine and are accessible after opening the front
door above the transport unit (d-lab.2) or feeder unit (d-lab.2plus).

Position of the parts inside the machine – see attachment: "PE-SSL.jpg" and "Cable
Adapter.jpg"

Error analysis
just as in the gas laser (for details see repair instructions of the respective machines and
corresponding LTNs).

The script “check monitor diodes.txt” can no longer be used!

Instead of this the script “get_status_of_SSL.txt” is used.

• Check the exposure quality and pixel offset by means of the “X-print”.
• Sudden color changes or completely missing colors can also be detected in the print of
the color scale “Regoutn_4”.
Then check / replace / adjust the respective AOM.
• Performance check and measuring of laser data by means of the script
“quick_check_lasermodule.txt”.

If green or blue are missing and the AOM are not the cause of this problem:
• Swap the cables for the laser heads green and blue at the cable adapter board to
determine the defective solid state laser.
If this is not successful:
• Swap the green / blue controller cables on the controllers to check the function of the
controllers.
• Check the voltages on the Power Monitor board (also jumper the respective pins for
hardware controlled switching of voltages).
• For the respective pins refer to the following description.
• Check the LEDs on the Laser-Remote board – see description below.

Replacing the Solid State Laser (FKL) - Color Laser Recorder (FLR)
Procedure as for gas laser FLR.

Do not forget:
Before the old unit is removed check the flag for the FLR check for startup of the new SSL
color laser recorder.
Use the script "Scripts for Service\printer\laser\ Lasermodul_reset_initialisation_flag.txt".
The information n LTN 20020607103730 and he repair instructions still apply, however with
the following feature:
Input of the FLR type (script: “set laser type.txt”) only included as of SW 7.80!

Replacing the Controllers blue / green

The controllers for blue and green are identical and can be interchanged.
Setup or alignment are not required!

Replacing the Power Monitor board

Make sure that the correct firmware is loaded!

Replacing the Laser Remote PCB and Laser Power Supply

Functional description
PCB Power Monitor new
General function
This board is responsible for the triggering and monitoring of the Printer power supply and
the solid state laser via SPI command interface. All output voltages are A/D converted and
can be checked. For this the SPI interface in the microcontroller analyzes the commands and
reacts accordingly.
The SPI interface implemented in the controller is triggered by differential drivers (RS422).

Remote function for the Power Supply

After the controller reset, the power voltages (24V, 36V, 22.5V) are switched off. They can be
switched on and off via SPI command. 8 s after a reset the 24V are switched on
automatically, so the fans (CCD cooling) can be switched on during the download in the
Printer.
For service purposes a jumper can be set on J2, J3, J4 to switch on the voltages 22.8V, 24V,
or 36V independent of the software. Jumper J1 presently has no function.
J2 only has an effect if the LOCK switch on the lamp is closed.
The high-impedance output of all available outputs of the power supply are level-converted
and applied at the 11-input / 10-bit A/D converter.
The measuring values are constantly recorded in a program loop and compared to the
nominal values. Depending on the command SPI interrupt messages are displayed in case
of commands. The monitoring results are also indicated by the LEDs. They light up if the
respective voltage is within the required range. The voltages are recorded at the out put of
the power supply and not at the consumers!

Remote Function for the Laser

The Power Monitor PCB is connected with the Laser Remote PCB for control and monitoring
of the solid state laser green and blue.
The Laser Remote PCB ensures automatic switch-on of the laser even if the Power Monitor
is in reset. For this purpose the -5V are switched on as well if the +12V are present. The
respective laser signals temperature reached by the LEOUT_G ( LEOUT_B) signal.
(LED indication “LEO_G” or “LEO_B”).
Afterwards the signal LOIN_G (LOIN_B), LED indication “LOI_G” or “LOI_B” is activated
which in turn switches on the laser. The LOIN_G (LOIN_B) signal can only be activated if this
is not prevented by the active switch-off by the Power Monitor.
If the laser is in a stable work condition, this is indicated by the signal LPOUT_G
(LPOUT_B) sent to the Power Monitor. And there the status is indicated with the LED display
LA_G_OK (LA_B_OK).
Upon command the Power Monitor can send a TNIN_G ( TNIN_B) signal if the laser should
run an autotuning routine.
Various work conditions of the laser are sent to the Power Monitor via further parallel signals.
These statuses can be displayed via software commands.
Furthermore the operating voltages for the laser (-5V , +12V) also go to the Power Monitor
and there they can be evaluated and indicated:

Voltage on the laser Lower permissible Upper permissible

power supply output threshold threshold
-5V -4.7V -5.3V
+12V +10.9V +13.1V
Controller firmware update
After a board replacement the firmware must be checked and updated if necessary.
Thereby keep in mind that the hardware and thus also the software of gas laser and solid
state laser are different. Software “PO (solid)” applies to the solid state laser

Functional description of the Laser-Remote PCB

Purpose and function of the PCB
To switch on the laser controllers green and blue in time (Shimadsu), to heat the laser heads
green and blue, and to switch on the laser diodes green and blue. The procedure starts with
the supply of the +6.5V by the Printer power supply and therefore it can be executed in
parallel with the boot process of the Printer. The +12V and –5V supply are switched on. The
switch-on process of the laser green and blue can be interrupted or delayed by active
interference of the Power Monitor and only by this action. In case of normal operation (reset
and initialization status of the Power Monitor) the Power Monitor remains passive.
The +6.5V source voltage switches on the semi-conductor “last” relay RS1 (solid state relay),
which in turn switches on the laser power supply module (LEB-100F-1-SN by Cosel) for
+12V and –5V. The Power Monitor is able to switch off RS1.
Only when the laser power supply provides the +12V supply (switch-on sequence +12V
before –5V), it is directly connected to laser controllers. This voltage is also necessary to
heat up the laser heads. If the voltage of the +12V exceeds a value of approx. 10.97 V, LED
D1 (12P) lights up and the opto-coupler IC1 triggers the MOSFET D3, once the voltage –5V
has the correct value.
The triggered MOSFET D3 connects the –5V supply to the laser controllers. If the value of
this voltage exceeds approx. 4.37V, LED D2 (5N) will light and the opto-coupler IC4 switches
on signal 5N_OK.
Once the heating for green and/or blue are completed, the signals /LEOUT_G and/or
/LEOUT_B become active and the LEDs D9 (LEO_G) and/or D12 (LEO_B) light up.
The signals of the Power Monitor /LAS_G_OFF and/or /LAS_B_OFF are inactive per default.
By an active signal the Power Monitor can switch off the respective laser diode.
Once the last 3 points have been met, the respective transistors activate the signals /LOI_G
and/or /LOIN_B to switch on the laser diode, and the LEDs D7 (LOI_G) and/or D11 (LOI_B)
light up. The auto-tuning starts.
After successful completion of the auto-tunings the signals /LOOUT_G and /LOOUT_B in the
controllers are activated and connected through to the Power Monitor.
