ODOC, SENTENCE OUTLINE for THEOLOGY OF THE SACRAMENTS (Comps, OLD CURRICULUM)

I. A Sacrament is a saving symbolic act or a visible sign, arising from the ministry of Christ and
continued in, by, and for the Church, which, when received in faith, fashions us into greater
likeness of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit(CFC 1531).

A. Jesus Christ is the Primordial Sacrament and the Church is the Foundational Sacrament.

B. The Sacraments gives grace ex opera operato.

C. Sacraments are signs or symbols that bring about an encounter with Jesus Christ
(efficacious signs/symbols). They are not just indicative signs but performative word events
that make present the spiritual reality they express (CFC 1521).

1. Signs could be essential sacramental sign (e.g. exchange of consent between the man and
woman for marriage) or explanatory rite(e.g. ring, array)

II. Celebrative Shape of Sacraments includes Introductory Rite, Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of
the Sacrament, and Concluding Rite.

III. Through the Seven Sacraments, the Church make present the saving act of Jesus Christ.

A. Sacrament of Initiation includes Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation.

B. Sacrament of Healing includes Penance and Anointing of the Sick.

C. Sacrament of Vocation includes Marriage and Holy Orders.
