Prompt:
Over the course of recent years there has been a proliferation of ‘for-profit’ schools in an
environment of rising educational costs. Discuss with classmates what promises these
institutions make to students in terms of success after graduation (generally measured by
graduation time, graduation rate, or job placement). How are these schools incentivized
to operate, and what potential challenges arise with for-profit education? In what ways
can tensions arise when the organization tries to meet the needs of students and
shareholders? How is this situation complicated by a student’s SES, gender, sexuality,
race, or ethnicity?
