Case and Motivation

22100728, Chun Ji Sheng

1. Describe your statistical analysis project case, and explain why you have chosen the research

topic and data set for a specific organization/institution/country/class/group as your individual

task.

To begin with, I would like to quote from The Wolf of Wall Street, where the main

character, Jordan Belfort, said, “There's no nobility in poverty. I've been a rich man and I've been

a poor man. And I choose rich every … time.” Although Jordan broke the law during his process

of becoming rich, this made me wonder if crime rates are higher among poor people than for

people in middle and upper class. Therefore I would like to do a statistical analysis on the effect

of poverty on crime rates, specifically in Korea.

2. Describe the main “beneficiaries” of your research project. Articulate potential contribution of

the project outcome to the society, with specific examples (when successful).

Poverty exists in all countries. If the project turns out to prove that there is a significant

correlation between poverty and crime rates in Korea, it means action must taken to lower the

poverty rates to deter crime. Because of the pandemic, many people are struggling, being no

longer in middle class or falling below the poverty threshold. If results of this project comes out

as expected, the government and people must come up with solutions for aid and relief for a

more stable society.

3. Clearly state the goals of statistical analysis for this task

The goals of this statistical analysis is to find out whether the crime rates are higher

among poor people than for middle class and upper class people in South Korea.
