Let Us Learn

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to
help you how to have simple survey using technology and other data gathering
method. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different
learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level
of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the
course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to correspond
with the textbook you are now using.

A survey is conducted in order to collect data from a selected group of

respondents to gain information and insights into various topics of interest.
The process involves asking people for information through a questionnaire,
which can be either online or offline.

Surveys are useful in describing the characteristics of a large

population. No other research method can provide this broad capability,
which ensures a more accurate sample to gather targeted results in which to
draw conclusions and make important decisions. Survey is often used to
assess thoughts, opinions, and feelings. A good sample selection is a key as
it allows one to generalize the findings from the sample to the population,
which is the whole purpose of survey.

Step 2 – Ask the question
Step 3 – Tally the results
Step 4 – Present the result

Tips in Creating a Survey Form.

1. Define the purpose of the survey
2. Keep your survey focused
3. Keep the question simple

Customer satisfaction survey is a questionnaire designed to help

businesses understand what their customers think about their products or
services, their brand, and their customer.

Products are in the form of home furnishings, tabletops, jewelries,

decorative accessories, home accents, kitchen and garden decors. Customers
buying craft vary generally from tourists, collectors, business people, artists
or artisans, people attending conferences and many others.

Market Trends on Products Made of Bamboo, Wood and Metal

Philippine products are in demand not only within the local market but
also in the international market. Locally manufactured products intended for
the global market have unique designs and high-quality craftsmanship that
demand higher value and earn profits for entrepreneurs.

Customer preferences

Customer preferences are the expectations, likes, dislikes, motivations

and inclinations that drive customer purchasing decisions. For example, a
customer needs furniture made of bamboo and they would prefer a particular
and design. Understanding the preferences of customers is a good marketing
technique.

3
To have a marketable and saleable products, artist and manufacturers
must know their consumers and their preferences in terms of colors, style size
and quantity. It is also helpful to know their interests and needs. They must
be creative, and adopt new design trends for their product to be competitive
in the market.

Finishing materials, accessories, and design must be done in

cooperation with the management and marketing team to ensure that the
finished product is good so that everyone can enjoy and continuously buy or
patronized.

Finishing is one of the most important steps in enhancing wood. A good

start deserves a good “finish”.
Techniques in Finishing:

1. Staining – it is done to enhance the wood’s true color or to create

uniformity when the wood has an inconsistent appearance.

2. Glazing and toning – these are techniques used to highlight the details
in the woodwork or to unify and add depth to the color.

3. Pickling and liming – these are the traditional finishing process used to
accentuate the wood grain. The highlighting is achieved by using two
contrasting colors the base color and another rubbed into grain.

4. Bleaching – it is used to lighten the natural color of wood or to removed

discoloration caused by moisture. Bleaching can also be used to achieve
the base color in preparation for pickling or liming.

5. Distressing – it is a technique that can be used to give age and interest

to the finish. This can be done in number of ways including:

a.) Sanding the finish away from areas that would have been worn over
the years.

b.) Rubbing the finish away with a chemical; and

c.) Striking the surface with a mix objects that will randomly dent the
finish.

Different Kinds of Finishing Materials

Varnish – a finishing material that beautifies and preserves a project It is
made of copal gum dissolve in pure boiled linseed oil. Copal gum comes from
resin of pine tress buried several feet below the ground. Linseed oil comes
from oil of cotton seed. Varnish and turpentine are sold in cans and bottles.

4
Shellac – it is a good finish for many projects. It comes from the excreta of
insects called a lac bug. The color is yellow and appears like small pieces of
cellophane. Before it is used, it is mixed with denatured alcohol.

Lacquer – it serves to protect the finish. It dries quickly and provides a hard
finish.

Wax – it is used to seal and protect the wood. It can be used to rejuvenate an
old finish or can be used as a finish itself.

Paint – a finishing material that is always used because of its beautiful color
and a good protector of materials. The body of paint is a mixture of four
elements: pigment, vehicle, thinner, and drier. It comes in cans of different
sizes. When the paint gets sticky or hard, add paint thinner. If thinner is not
available, use gasoline or petroleum as a substitute.

Paint finishing materials are intended mainly for painting operations. It

makes possible a substantial reduction in the labor-intensiveness
of finishing operations and an improvement in the protective and decorative
properties of structures.

These materials are used to beautify, decorate, and improve the quality
of finished products.

1. Finishing materials that are used to smoothen the products before

decorating.

2. Colored paper twines and ribbon cloth are used in decorating and
wrapping products.

3. Beads and charms are small accessories of different colors used to

make products attractive.

4. Abaca and sinamay fibers are paper-thin locally made materials used
for wrapping or packaging purposes.
