OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson learners should be able to
i)Describe tectonic movement
ii)Explain the implications of plate tectonic movement on natural disasters e.g volcanoes

INTRODUCTION
Tr:Last time when we met we talked about the continental drift theory. Can someone explain at
least two things we agreed on the continental drift theory.
E/A:The continents were once a huge mass and later drifted apart.
Tr:That is correct.

LESSON DECLARATION
Tr:If we agreed on the fact that continents are drifted apart.Today we want to know why plates
move and what happens when they move.
-On the topic for today we are going to discuss divergent plate margins and resultant landforms.

STEP 1
The teacher instructs the learners to write the notes while she explains the introduction of plate
tectonics.
PLATE TECTONICS THEORY
The continental drift theory failed to provide a satisfactory evidence of hoes and why continents
moved . However, new evidence proved that continents are "carried as passengers" or portions of
the earth called plates. As the plate moves so do the continents they are carrying along with these.

STEP 2
Tr:Can someone tell us how many plates do we have.
E/A:We have 9 plates.
Tr:That is correct but we have to know that we have seven major plates in (i)African (ii) Indian
(iii)South American (iv)North American (v) Australian (vi)Eurosian (vii) Antarctic
-We also have two minor plates the Nazon and Arabian plate,so this gives us a plate.

STEP 3
-The teacher explains why plates move.
-The plate move because of convectional currents seas are created as continents drift apart, the
process is termor sea or ocean floor spreading.

PLATE MARGINS
-Plate margins represent the boundary between two plates. There are three types of plate
boundaries divergent,convergent and conservative.
-Divergent or constructive marger is what we are going to talk about and resultant landforms.

STEP 4
Tr: What comes into your mind when you hear the word diverge.
E/A:Two objects moving away from each other.
Tr: Divergent or constructive marger,in this case two plates are moving away from each other due
to convectional current pulling the plates apart(tensional forces).

STEP 5
Tr:So we have seen that in the intial stages of divergent plate boundary a rift valley we formed. On
the later stage if plates continue to move away from each other, magma comes out and solidifies to
form a ridge. The teacher instructs the learners to write notes.

STEP 6
Tr:What have we learned in today's lesson.
E/A:A divergent plate boundary is a sitation whereby plates are moving away from each other and
the landforms formed are a rift valley and a ridge.

STEP 7
The teacher gives the class monitor notes and homework.

CONCLUSION
Tr:This is all what we need to know about the divegent or constructive margin. In our next lesson
we will be focusing on the other plate margins.

EVALUATION
STRENGTHS
The objectives of the lesson were achieved. This was facilitated by the teacher's ability to use
media. The content given was suitable for the learner's cognitive level.

WEAKNESS
The lesson took more time as the learners were drawing the diagrams.

SUGGESTIONS
The teacher needs to improve time management especially in lessons that needs explanations and
drawings.
