Evaluating Functions
EXAMPLE 1 Evaluate the following functions at x = 4:
a) f(x) = 3x – 2
b) g(x) = 3x2 − 4x
c) h(x) = √ x + 4
d) r(x) = 2x2 + x − 1

Solution:
a. f(x) = 3x – 2 b. g(x) = 3x2 – 4x c. h(x) = √x + 4 d. r(x) = 2x2 + x – 1
f(4) = 3(4) – 2 g(x) = 3(4)2 – 4(4) h(x) = √4 + 4 r(x) = 2(4)2 + 4 – 1
f(4) = 12 – 2 g(x) = 3(16) – 16 h(x) = ±2 + 4 r(x) = 2(16) + 4 – 1
f(4) = 10 g(x) = 48 – 16 h(x) = 2+4=6 r(x) = 32 + 4 – 1
g(x) = 32 h(x) = -2 + 4 = 2 r(x) = 35

EXAMPLE 2 Evaluate these functions, where f and q are as defined in f(x) = 3x – 2

a) f (2x + 1) b) g (4x – 3)

Solution:
a. f (2x + 1) = 3x – 2 b. g (4x – 3) = 3x – 2
f (2x + 1) = 3(2x + 1) – 2 g (4x – 3) = 3(4x – 3) – 2
f (2x + 1) = 6x + 3 – 2 g (4x – 3) = 12x – 9 – 2
f (2x + 1) = 6x + 1 g (4x – 3) = 12x – 11
