Is authenticity in art a gender issue?

It is known in the art world that a crucial issue to determine the value of a work of art is related to the
authenticity. Let’s talk about the case of Jackson Pollock.

First and foremost, there is no doubt that Pollock was the biggest modern painter in the USA. He
became famous for developing the abstract technic of “dripping”. This consists in covering a horizontally
positioned canvas with dripping paint. This abstract technic capture the spontaneity of the imaginary lash
of a painter. Perhaps, it might not seem difficult to do this, but it actually takes a lot of effort to create a
personal style in this uncertain tools.

While he acquired unusual fame, his problems with alcohol increased. It was getting harder and harder
for him to concentrate on his work. Thus, his wife, the invisible artist Lee Krasner decided to take place in
this mess. First of all, she took the role of his manager and administrated the economic side. However,
this weren’t enough because Jackson was progressively enable to paint. Consequently, she decided to
take the whole role and started painting herself.

Although this behavior seems morally reprehensible, in this specific socio-historical context, women
could not achieve artistic recognition. Therefore, this mechanism was the only one she found to express
herself even if she had to do it hidden behind her husband's signature.

Finally, the main question that involves this case is about the authenticity in the art. Is the last period art
work of Jackson Pollock genuine or not? Does it matter? In conclusion, this opinion essay tries to explore
the mysteries of a fascinating artist and his enigmatic talented woman, who helped him to be the
legendary artist that still stands today. But, why is she not mentioned in the main art museums in the
world? Is authenticity in art even today governed by patriarchal standards?
