WHY FREEDOM GIANT MISCANTHUS?
Every month Americans rely on OPEC nations for 30 billion dollars in fuel, a situation that has lead
to a disturbingly volatile market. Gas prices at the pump can jump by $0.50 or more in a matter of
hours, startling consumers and affecting every sector of the American economy. The goal of Freedom
Giant Miscanthus is to put the fuel market into the hands of local producers, and begin taking control
of a seemingly random market.
CONTROL
Pound for pound, Freedom Giant Miscanthus has a higher yield, and produces more fuel than any
other biofuel source (corn, switch grass, etc.). By planting Freedom Giant Miscanthus throughout the
Southeast, farmers and refiners will provide real competition to OPEC nations, and begin exerting a
real influence on the US fuel market.
If the state of Georgia planted miscanthus on 1/3 of the total farmable land in the state, it would
quickly become the 3rd largest producer of fuel in the world.
EFFICIENCY
Freedom Giant Miscanthus thrives in soils that fail to meet the needs of other plants used for
ethanol production. This success is due in large part to the root system, which regularly reaches 2.5
meters in length. With a deeper root system, Freedom Giant Miscanthus gains access to additional
water and nutrients without the need for fertilizers or irrigation.
Some of the highest miscanthus yields spring from relatively poor, Type III soils in Georgia.
SUCCESS
Whether measured in acres yielded or tons of biomass produced, Freedom Giant Miscanthus is one
of the most profitable plants for farmers. The strength and stability of the grass translates into relatively
little tending and post-harvest processing.
Farmers can grow Freedom Giant Miscanthus with a profit potential of $100/ton, $2,000 per acre.
BIO - PHILLIP JENNINGS
For 17 years, Philip Jennings worked as a grade school teacher and an advisor to the local Future
Farmers of America chapter. He taught during business hours, but passionately farmed his own land
when he got the chance. In 1997, Philip made the jump from spare-time amateur to full-time farmer,
with a 100-acre grass farm.
Today, Philip Jennings Turf Farms is an international organization, with over 3,000 acres of grass in
the US, as well as additional operations in Mexico, China, and Malaysia. From these farms, over 6,000
tractor trailers of grass are shipped to golf courses and real estate developers in Mexico, China, South
Africa, Bermuda, Spain, Dubai, Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas.
Just over 3 years ago, Philip Jennings began quietly researching giant miscanthus grass as a source
of ethanol production, with the goal of leading the Southeast U.S. into the American consumer fuel
market. In those three years, his research funding and initiatives have lead to the first patented,
university-endorsed miscanthus strain. As one of the world's most promising non-renewable energy
resources, Philip called the plant Freedom Giant Miscanthus.
