Respected Sir/Madam
Statement of Purpose
This Statement of Purpose (SOP) for my Visa Subclass-500 application is a pleasant experience for
me to introduce myself. I considered this SOP to have genuine truth about myself, my academic
background, my intention to study abroad and not Nepal, and my future plan with great intention to
return to my home country to put forth what I have learned during my abroad study. The main
reason for writing this SOP is to pursue my UG Degree (Bachelor of Information Technology) from
the prestigious Wentworth Institute of Higher Education.
Introduction

I, Utsav Thapaliya (Passport No. 12379075) introduce myself as energetic, and enthusiastic, with
a keen interest in technology and innovations and always seek to acquire new knowledge. I was
born on September 22nd, 1999 A.D to Mr. Yam Prasad Thapaliya & Mrs. Kalpana Thalpaliya, and a
permanent resident of Siddhalek-06, Dhading, Nepal.

Further introducing myself, since my childhood, I’ve been a very enthusiastic person as regard to
technology, and always wanted to pursue my career in the field of computing and information
technology. As a fact, my parents are also very supportive regarding my education career that’s why
I have been working towards better advancement of my future and decided to pursue my
Undergraduate Degree at Australia.

Academic Background
Completing my School Leaving Certificate (SLC) i.e. 10 th from Bright Future English Boarding School
Benighat, Dhading with a score of 66.25% [2015 AD], I joined DCOM (Diploma in Computer
Engineering) course which is a 3-years-long course in 2015. The reason behind choosing the
Diploma over +2 was due to the high potential of increasing skills in the field of computing as I
always was fond of computer and technology. I chose Oxford Advanced Engineering College Kalanki,
Kathmandu affiliated with the reputed Council For Technical And Vocational Education(CTEVT)
in 2015, and completed in 2019 AD with 68%.
The course was primarily focused on computer hardware, fundamentals of programming, database
managements, networking and various information about computer. Although it was a 3-year-long
course [2015-2018], due to backlogs, I completed that course in 2019 AD. Besides, most of the
computer courses like Engineering, BCA, & BIT comprise non-computer units too. In the case of
DCOM, subjects like science and electrical engineering don’t fall under the favorites of a student
whose keen interest is in computer topics only, without having to worry about chemical reactions
and the law of physics.
Work Experience with Gap Justifications

Initially after giving my final exam (6th Semester) I then started my first job at Top Nepal
International Pvt. Ltd an ISO 9001:2015 (QMS) Certified Company (https://topnepal.com.np/)
where I worked from January 2019 to 2020 February under the post as Content Writer. The
obvious reason behind quitting the job was COVID pandemic outbreak in 2019. After the
outbreak, pandemic directly affected me and my family which made me more difficult to continue
my job and also fearing the pandemic leads to quit my job.

The whole world witnessed the pandemic and thus many people became jobless including me.
The situation became worse, then Nepal witnesses’ country-wide lockdown from 24th March
2020 till 14th June 2020. After that in September 2020 I rejoined new job at IT Genie Pvt. Ltd
(https://np.linkedin.com/in/purushottam-khanal-b29162136) as a Computer Support
Specialist till March 2022. Having work experience in the field of computer, I then decided to
obtain a Bachelor’s degree from abroad to further advance my career.

It’s not that, I didn’t want to continue my education journey after diploma but COVID stuck and
the crisis made it difficult to join any universities or colleges. As a whole world witnessed the
unforgettable imprints of the pandemic on the global community. According to UNESCO global
education coalition, COVID-19 pandemic affected more than 1.5 billion student’s population
globally causing one of the largest disruptions in the history of formal education,
(https://en.unesco.org/covid19/educationresponse/globalcoalition).

The COVID-19 virus created unfamiliar times all around the globe. As Nepal government
announced a second lockdown on 29th April 2021 where I could not join any English Proficiency
Courses like IELTS/PTE physical class due to the effect of COVID-19 as all the educational
consultancies were closed at that time. So, I continued doing my job. After the Corona Virus
situation in my home country became normal, I decided to pursue my ambition of studying aboard
and did some research regarding studying abroad. Also, at the same time the Australian
government officially opened their borders for international students in December 2021. After
then, I got the opportunity to apply for my higher academic procedure.

Language Test:
After planning for study abroad, I must score good band in English proficiency tests (IELTS or
TOFEL or PTE) to qualify for the universities and colleges. Initially after the Australian
government opened the boarder, I started learning English Proficiency Language class and
I decided to take the test Pearson Test of English (PTE) from British Council on April 7th
2022. However, I managed to secure 57 overall bands with 52 in listening, 61 in reading,
62 in speaking and 56 in writing and became eligible to apply for the preferred course by
proving my language proficiency.

Family Background and Financial Support
Family are the one who supports us in every steps of life and they are the great inspiration
for everyone. My family members are also very supportive and are very concerned
regarding my education career. They help me out financially, emotionally, and socially at
every turn in my life. My parents are a major source of inspiration for me since they taught
in me the belief that education is major factor for success in life. They taught the values and
discipline of endurance, hard work, dedication, and respect for others.

My father and grandmother are financial sponsors for my tuition fees, accommodation and
insurance costs while studying and staying in Australia. My father, Mr. Yam Prasad
Thapaliya earns annual income of NRs. 1,857,142.83(equivalent to AUD 21044.14) from
own business (Bedanta Kirana Stores) as per audit report and he receives
NRs.231,396.00(equivalent to AUD 2,622.05) from pension (Nepalese Army) as per his
salary certificate. In total, he earn annual income of NRs. 2,088,538.83 (equivalent to AUD
24,069.82) from business and his pension as per audit report and bank statement.

In addition to this, my grandmother has sponsored me for my education loan of NPR

4,000,000 (equivalent to AUD 46,431.39) from Century Commerce Bank Ltd. This amount
of money is only allocated to support my relevant expenses in Australia. With regards to
my financial sponsors, I can assure you that during my period of undergraduate studies and
all my living expenses in Australia, my family will be capable to support me for my
education.

Reason for not choosing home country Nepal & Research in education
provider of Nepal
Undoubtedly, everyone wants to receive a degree from a certified and reputed
University/Colleges. But, being a citizen from a developing country, Nepal where it
somehow lacks to provide quality education. Which is why I felt the need to choose the
right destination for my better future and for the better future of my country.
I did researches and surveys on my home country regarding my higher academic career. As
a citizen of Nepal, my foremost priority would be my home country where universities like
Kathmandu University (https://ku.edu.np/), Tribhuvan University (https://tribhuvan-
university.edu.np/), Pokhara University (https://pu.edu.np/), Purbanchal University
(https://www.puexam.edu.np/) etc. offers related program in Bachelor degree but the
education structure in these universities and colleges is very rigid and the education
system is very traditional as the study system applies theory-based class rather than real-
world experience.
There are some colleges and universities I have gone through my research such as
Advanced College of Engineering and Management, Birendra Multiple Campus, Shree
Siddhanath Science Campus, Kathmandu University, and Purbanchal University. None of
the institutions has the flexibility of courses in Bachelors of Information Technology. As
always having issue in some of the courses that mustn’t be included for computer student
such as science and electrical courses it makes harder to complete the course for me.
Additionally, due to the political instability in Nepal, it makes more complicated to continue
my study. If the course that I wants was also available in my home country Nepal, then also
I am not ready to study here as I have witnesses the education system of Nepal and even
my friends, and relatives are studying here and they share with the current scenario and
problems of the education system in Nepal. Sometimes it took 4 years bachelors to
complete more than 5 years due to political problem and as well as College/University
situation. After studying in home country for more than decade, I don’t want to say that the
education system is completely defect but studying and experiencing the much time in
Nepal leads to demotivates to study here.
As IT field is dynamic where having practical based education with international relevance
is a mandatory. However, in context of Nepal, practical, professional, productive, and
practical courses are still limited and outdated. Lack of a preferred course provider and an
updated curriculum, an unpredictable academic calendar, and very week government
education policies lead students to choose international colleges and universities as their
study location.
Studying in Nepal will not allow me the international exposure as well. Though the
bachelor program cost is considerably cheaper in Nepal, but the value of bachelor’s degree
obtained from Australia compared to Nepal is very highly acknowledged and acceptable
globally. On the other hand, education system of Nepal is not as qualitative as that in other
countries. The educational system in Nepal is unfriendly to graduates; the outdated
teaching strategies and curricula do not keep students updated of the speed at which the
technology in the world is evolving. I have to avoid them by only having a certificate in my
hand that has no market value. Therefore, I intended to study abroad for my UG degree
where I can learn practical-based knowledge and more important thing is I will be able to
cope up with different hard situation through my practical knowledge. Other than that,
Management of universities and colleges in Nepal is too weak for delaying in delivery of the
courses, exam schedule and publishing result, frequently disturbances in the university
along with old teaching methodologies and unable to produce graduates as per the need of
current Nepalese market.
So, to increase my skills and knowledge, for being self-motivated, and gather the
knowledge from around world, I choose Australia for my Higher Education destination
rather choosing home country, Nepal. Conclusively, I main reason I don’t want to study in
Nepal is due to its theory-based education, for having 4 years bachelors (3 years in
Australia), its incompetent education system, political instability and unskillful education.

Why not other developed countries for higher education

Being serious, I thoroughly researched and surveys on the several official websites of multiple
colleges and universities from other countries that I was considering, including the USA, Canada,
the UK, and Japan to look after international education degree for my Undergraduate Degree in
Information Technology. Through I look after USA which is considered as the land of opportunity,
but unfortunately I found fee structure top-notched compared to Australian Universities and
Colleges.
United Kingdom (UK) is also considered as one of the best academic destination for students
around the world. However, the cost of tuition fees and living cost is so expensive in comparison to
Australia. Also, students who are in UK are facing lots of problem in terms of security, career
outcomes and lack of responsibility after the closure of educational institutions.
Then again, I went through Canadian Universities/ Colleges but the weather condition is completely
unfamiliar to me. Not only in America and Canada, but I also went through Japanese, Korean,
Chinese and European Universities that required me to learn their native languages which leads to
lose my more years and having English as second language it is defiantly easy to go through those
county whose native language is English.
So, evaluation all the above circumstances, while comparing admission fees, student preference
rates, climatic conditions, and reliable sources, among Australia, Canada, the UK, the USA, and
European countries, I choose Australia as my study destination.

Why I choose Wentworth Institute and why not other UNI/colleges

Finding a suitable educational institution which is internationally recognized to undertake my
undergraduate study was sure a difficult task for me. My curiosity and research from internet
brought me across numerous educational institutions and colleges that offers Bachelors Of
Information Technology, such as the Melbourne Institute of Technology (MIT), The University of
Sydney, The University of New South Wales, Wentworth Institute, King's Owns Institute, etc., but
among all of them Wentworth Institute of Higher Education caught my attention due to its
competitive tuition rates (AUD 52,400 for 3 years), preferred location (Sydney), and reputation
maintained by this academic institution. After spending several time researching for my academic I
then concluded Wentworth Institute would be the perfect college to for my subject due to its
student supportive environment, modern study environment, flexible and updated courses
and more personalized lectures.

Wentworth Institute of Higher Education (Formerly known as Victory Institute of Higher

Education) is one of the reputed colleges with a long history of practical and industry-
based teaching. This institute provides qualitative, affordable, and supportive campus
environment along with modern facilities and educational materials where the offered
courses are accredited by TEQSA (Tertiary Education and Quality Standards Agency). This
institute offers range of higher degrees that are based on research-training programs and
are supervised by expert academic staff. Courses at Wentworth Institute are continuously
being updated, organized upon practical outcomes, and taught by highly skilled academic
experts. This institution aims to be known as a top education provider, renowned for
caring environment for students and guiding them on the path towards successful careers.

Through the provision of industry-relevant, innovative, quality education courses. It also

aims to address the learning needs of international students and in term of the future
needs of students with which they will be employed. Besides, program offered in
Wentworth regularly reviewed so that they’ve national and international relevance.
Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology from Wentworth is highly effective which is
designed to develop the programming skills, problem-solving tactics, about networking
and so on.

In addition, the main reason for choosing Wentworth is due to its affordable fee structure
compared to other Australian colleges and universities for bachelor of IT programs. The
tuition fees of Wentworth is AUD 17,600 per annum whereas other colleges and
universities' fee structures are around AUD 25000-35000 per annum. Comparing
Wentworth with Victoria University and at western Sydney, the tuition is AUD 33300 per
year. I found the above-mentioned universities are quite more expensive than Wentworth.
In other universities, we cannot get proper attention and care from professors due to a
large number of students whereas Wentworth has a smaller number of students through
which I can get proper care and guidance from professors. In KOI there are very limited
international students whereas the maximum number of students come from Nepal, India
and China. Wentworth has good students mixed up and has an excellent support system for
the international student so that we can feel a homely environment.

The college is located at Surry Hills, Australia, which is one of the world-class cities in the
world and draws a population from over 200 countries which offers mixed cultural
experiences tied up in food, music, arts, festival and exhibition. The campus located was
established to deliver high-quality degree programs for both domestic and international
students. The entry requirement is quite flexible in comparison to other universities and
colleges. It is the hub of transport and restaurant facilities with suit every budget and taste.
The campus located in Sydney will be accessible with trains metro and busses so I can
transport from university to staying place easily. There is on-campus accessibility, well-
equipped labs and studios at Wentworth that will help me to achieve my future plans. I
compared the course structure elective unit’s class size of Wentworth Institute and the
above-mentioned Universities and was finally satisfied to study my course. So, I would like
to take the same degree at an affordable course from Wentworth. I also checked a video on
YouTube about Wentworth while doing research and I also checked reviews over there. I
also received counselling from a counsellor about Wentworth. So I came to know that,
studying at Wentworth Institute will become a lifelong investment.
Finally, I concluded that Wentworth Institute will be the best choice for higher education
institutions over the above-mentioned education providers.

Reasons for Choosing Information Technology
Having interest on computer and technology since childhood led to study 3-year-long Diploma
course in Computer Engineering in my home country Nepal. Also, after working in an IT company
for more than two years, experiencing newer technology and getting a Diploma in computer
engineering, I realized I have to pursue my career in the field of IT. Since I liked staying in front of
computers as long as possible and search for new information, I always gave studying Information
Technology the first priority. Now I know what exactly should to do for my career and that, i.e. to
pursue my further studies in IT.

Studying information technology has relevance in all aspects of how we build our corporate
empires and operate in the modern world. To address a variety of professional needs, the majority
of business organizations use a wide range of technologies and software. Similar to this, companies
use business information system experts to do tasks. Thus, the information system is crucial to the
success of the company and hence to the nation's economy.

Today, in this technological era, the demand for technology and innovation is increasing day by
day. So, to fulfil the demand of society and for the developments of my own country like Nepal
needs lot of skilled manpower. So for that and for my own career development, I really want to
pursue my career in Information Technology. Through these experiences, learning exposures and
my dire motivation in this field, I have realized that it is completely dependent on academic growth
for the development of career building and this program perfectly suits my study interests.

After graduating in Information Technology, I will have the ability to analyze the complex program
related to technology and try to find out the best solution. As an IT professional, I will engage in
developing the business protocols and processes such as databases, backup system, and computer
system.

Reason for choosing Sydney for my higher education

There are several regions to choose in Australia to study and live but through my research from my
parents, from internet and from abroad friends, they suggested to choose Sydney as my study
location. I haven’t been to Australia once but through the internet we can observe the whole world,
isn’t it? The reason behind choosing Sydney is due to its environment, beauty and many opportunities
for abroad students. . I went through different websites while searching information about
Sydney which are as follows:
https://studentcities.com.au/study-sydney/
https://www.studyaustralia.gov.au/explore-australia/nsw/sydney

Sydney being the capital of New South Wales is the largest and oldest city in Australia and its
home to Sydney Opera house, Sydney Harbor Bridge, and numerous angelic beaches and
national parks. It is the perfect destination to study, work and enjoy life. It is beautiful,
relaxing and safe. It has quick access to bushland and wonderful parks and natural reserves
and it’s full of multicultural choices- whether to entertain, shopping or relaxation. Studying in
Sydney opens new horizons for everyone who chooses it for higher studies. My dreams will
be uplifted by Sydney’s charm and hospitality.
The city has plenty of opportunities to work and socialize. Sydney has a multiple café,
restaurant and retail stores where its east to access all the required items. This means that
there are plenty of opportunities for international students. The weather is perfect for riding
a bicycle, and exploring the city center. The public transport system in Sydney makes it easy
and convenient for students to get around the suburbs, city center, and other neighboring
areas like Newcastle, Gold Coast and beautiful mountain ranges which is familiar to my own
country Nepal.
Since Sydney offers so many options and positive feelings, I think my presence will be
productive. Thus, I decided that Sydney would be the best city for me to stay in and pursue
my higher education.

Living arrangement in Sydney

I intend to live in shared accommodation near Sydney City, close to Wentworth Institute,
after I arrive in Australia. This will be a new environment for me, especially with people from
the same cultural background, and I believe that if I stay in shared housing, I will receive
support from housemates as well. As I have researched from different website such as:
https://www.gumtree.com.au/ and https://flatmates.com.au/ where I can find cheap
accommodation and plenty of option for my living. While researching through the internet, I
came to know about average student’s accommodation and living cost in Sydney however
these costs can vary depending on study location in Australia. The below information was
provided by Australian government website ;
Accommodation
Hostels and Guesthouses $90 to $150 per week
Shared Rental $95 to $215 per week
On campus $110 to $280 per week
Home stay $235 to $325 per week
Rental $185 to $440 per week
Boarding schools $11,000 to $22,000 a year

Other living expenses

Groceries and eating out $140 to $280 per week

Gas, electricity $10 to $20 per week
Phone and Internet $15 to $30 per week
Public transport $30 to $60 per week
Car (after purchase) $150 to $260 per week
Entertainment $80 to $150 per week

Total Expenses During the Study and Stay in Australia

In relation to my total expenses in Australia, I have gone through it and calculated as per
Australian Standard for living i.e., AU$ 21,041*3=AU$ 63,123 for living expenses, tuition fee
expenses (AU$52,800), enrolment fee (AU$250), the material fee (AU$2,400), OSHC cost
(AU$2,090) and travel expenses (AU$4,000) becomes AU$ 124,663 for 3 years. So, the total
cost associated with whole expenses in Australia in Nepalese currency is approximately
NRs. 10,845,681 (estimated exchange rate 1 AU$ = NRs. 87).

My career plans after completing course (Bachelors of

Information Technology)
Completing my preferred course from Wentworth Institute will be the great achievement
for my academic career. Wentworth Institute’s Bachelor of Information Technology course
will defiantly take me to the next stage of my career paths in the industry of computing and
technology. International bachelor’s degree in IT is highly demanded in home country. After
completion of this course, I would prefer to complete my master’s degree from one of the
renowned universities and then return to my home country with having highly skill
profession. Through all of my achievements and skills gained from foreign country will be
most precious moment for me. Every door for the job will be welcoming me that will assist
me to contribute to the overall development of my home country in technology.

After acquiring necessary knowledge and professions, I will defiantly look after my country
and my family and through the skill I gathered I will shape my career in the industry of
Information Technology specialist. Returning home country as a highly qualified IT
professional I will apply for the jobs in various positions with average monthly salary the
company provided. There are several private and governmental job providers in Nepal who
provides decent salary for their highly skilled employee such as World Link Communication,
Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA), Nepal Telecom (NTC), Axiata (Ncell), Chaudhary Groups and
some International Levels companies like Verisk Nepal, Cotiviti Nepal, Cloud factory, Crossover Nepal,
Deerwalk and so on who continuously open vacancy for jobs in the different positions of Data Manager,
Senior Software Development Managers, technology consultant, business and system analyst, IT project
manager and some high level jobs. So, having the international degree as well as gathered skills and
experience helps me to provide my career jobs.

After research based on several websites like at https://www.paylab.com/np/salaryinfo/information-

technology
It says, the very basic employee can receive an average monthly salary of about 17k- 77k however for the
skilled and highly professional employee the salary exceeds more than 100k to 150k with incentives. As I
previously mentioned that there is a big demand for IT professionals, I will serve here in my motherland
as a high quality professional with respect to salary and live a quality life with my family. I have not only
planned to grow up myself as a sincere citizen, but I also have responsibilities towards my family member
who sponsored my education without a second thought.

Motivation to Return Home Country, Nepal

In the present situation, Nepal is on the verge to expand its national economy through
massive development plans and looking forward to become active in the global stage.
Economic development goals have been planned, projected and redesigned to attract foreign
investments and policies. At that moment, the country would need huge skilled manpower
for the nations to uplift its economy, and for the development of our nations. Being a
underdeveloped country Nepal is facing lots and lots of issues for its development and if I
could help my country with anything I am ready for that.
My specific intention from this application is to get higher education under the well-
regulated, prestigious and reputed education system of Australia. My primary goal is to use
the knowledge, experience and skills in my homeland ie. Nepal that I will gain during my
study in Australia. My chance of getting a job in a well-renowned company in Nepal will be
higher as the course scope of a bachelor of Information Technology is high in global and
domestic business job markets.
Besides this, I hold primal responsibilities and duties to fulfill my family members'
responsibilities and expectations. I must look after my parents as they would turn weaker
physically and emotionally with the growing age. Their devotion to nurturing me and
constant support to build academics and careers is precious. I must support them
financially, emotionally and morally as they will be eagerly waiting for my return to my
homeland. They will be very happy on my return and become proud of my academic
achievement in Australia.
Besides that, I am always a proud Nepali citizen and never think of settling in foreign
nations. If my own country’s universities and colleges has provided a quality education,
practice-based knowledge, and international level degree then I wouldn’t have apply for
international degree. Till now I have my identity as a Nepalese and will always be very
humble toward my motherland. Therefore, I promise that I would not let my identity to be
changed as it describes me throughout my life. My full emotions and sentiments always lie
for my family, friends, and hometown where I have passed beautiful unforgettable moments
of my life.
