3 Apprentice Task: The Baker

This baker uses different-sized boxes to


hold his baked goods.

Here are the box sizes:

Box What it holds

Bread box 2 loaves

Donut box 4 donuts

Muffin box 3 muffins

Cookies box 6 cookies

Work with your group to answer the following questions.


Show how you solved the questions on your group poster.

1. On Monday he baked 48 of each item. How many boxes did he need to hold all his
baked goods?

2. On Tuesday he baked 24 muffins. He also baked twice as many cookies as muffins, but
half as many donuts as muffins. He did not bake bread. How many boxes will he need
to hold all his baked goods?

3. On Wednesday he had to bake 60 items in total. He baked a combination of bread


loaves, donuts, muffins, and cookies. He wants to use the least number of boxes
possible. What combination of bread loaves, donuts, muffins and cookies should he
bake?

4. Is there more than one possible combination of the baked goods from Question 3 that
uses the least number of boxes? If so, what are they and how do you know?
