3 Milestone Task: 4th/5th Grade Field Trip Answer Guide

The fourth and fifth grades are going on a field trip to the Holiday Show at
the War Memorial Opera House. There are 240 students, 8 teachers and
14 parents riding on school buses to the show. The school ordered 6 buses
to take everyone to the show. How many people will need to go on each
bus if they are divided up as equally as possible? Show how you know.

One way to solve this problem:

Add up the passengers: 240 + 8 + 14 = 262
Divide 262 ÷ 6 = 43 with four extra people.
Buses will not carry the same number of people (for example, 2 buses could care 43
people (2 • 43 = 86 total) and 4 buses could carry 44 people (4 • 44 = 176 total) 176 + 86 =
262)

An alternate way to solve this problem:

Notice that 240 ÷ 6 = 40 (extended facts multiplication 6 • 40 = 240), so 40 students per
bus. Then divide adults 22 ÷ 6 = 3 with 4 extra adults. So 3 adults one each bus, then
distribute the extra 4 adults to the busses so that 43 + 43 + 44 + 44 + 44 + 44 = 262

When the 6 buses arrive, they find out that only 40 people fit on each bus. The rest will have
to go to the Holiday Show in cars. If each car holds 4 passengers, how many cars will they
need? Show how you know.

One way to solve this problem:

Notice that 6 • 40 = 240.
Knowing that there is a total of 262 people on this trip, subtract 262 – 240 = 22
Divide 22 ÷ 4 = 5 with 2 extra, so you will need 6 cars for everyone to go.

An alternate way to solve this problem:

Since we know that there are six buses and that people could be distributed in this
manner: 43 + 43 + 44 + 44 + 44 + 44, we can subtract 3 each from the busses with 43
(3 + 3 or 3 • 2 = 6) and 4 each from the buses with 44 ( 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 or 4 • 4 = 16).
6 + 16 = 22. Then divide 22 ÷ 4 = 5 with 2 extra, so you will need 6 cars for everyone to
go.
