National Classification of Occupations 2021

On November 16, 2022, we will transition to the 2021 version of the National Occupational Classification (NOC) .
We use the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system to classify jobs (occupations). Jobs are grouped
according to:

 job duties;
 the type of work performed by the incumbent.

For immigration purposes, the main job groups are:

 Skill type 0 (zero)  : management positions, such as:

o restaurant managers,
o mine managers,
o captains ashore (fishing).
 Skill level A  : professional positions that generally require a university degree, such as:
o doctors,
o dentists,
o architects.
 Skill level B  : technical or skilled jobs that generally require a college diploma or apprenticeship training,
such as:
o chiefs,
o electricians,
o plumbers.
 Skill Level C  : Intermediate positions that generally require a high school diploma or on-the-job training,
such as:
o butchers,
o long-haul truck drivers,
o food and beverage servers.
 Skill Level D  : Manual jobs that typically require on-the-job training, such as:
o fruit pickers,
o cleaning staff,
o oil sector workers.

As part of our immigration programs, we use the NOC to determine if a job or type of work experience meets the
program eligibility criteria. We consider “skilled” jobs belonging to skill type 0 or skill level A or B. We evaluate jobs
according to the 2016 version of the NOC.
