Exemplar notes on a Speaking activity

Here are some sample notes for you to look at. Of course, notes by different teachers will vary, and
there is no one correct answer.

Activity: 1. Story Picture Cards Learning Standard: 2.3.1 Narrate short basic stories and events

Learning Objectives for this activity (use the Learning Standard to inform these)

By the end of this lesson, pupils should be able to:

 Tell a simple, short story using appropriate vocabulary and sequencing

Any problems pupils might have, and their solutions:

Problem: Pupils may struggle to remember the irregular past forms of verbs.

Solution: Let pupils write down the past verb forms they can’t remember, and they can refer
to these when telling the story.

Problem: Some pupils may have difficulty formulating questions to ask at the end of the
story.

Solution: Provide some question starters on the board, e.g. When did you….? Who was…?

Differentiation strategies (consult ‘Differentiation strategies’ document)

 Strategy 2: Differentiate by the type and amount of support provided

As mentioned above, we can help pupils who struggle with the verbs in the past form by
allowing them to write down the correct forms of the verb and refer to these as they need.

 Strategy 3: Differentiate by the outcome expected from pupils

For weaker pupils, the aim should be to tell the story using the correct verbs. For stronger
pupils, challenge them to add more details to the story, and use sequencing expressions such
as ‘First’, ‘Next’, ‘Then’ etc.
