If I were Jose Rizal and had the opportunity to be a guest at the Real Audiencia de Manila, I
would choose Dr. Trinidad Pardo de Tavera. I believe it is obvious that Jose Rizal has been pro to
the people he is defending. And, based on these two lawyers' arguments, Jose Montero y Vidal
is pro-Spanish, claiming that they are the benefactors, guardians, and protectors of the Indians
by supervising their labor. While Dr. Trinidad Pardo de Tavera explains that the encomenderos
are the fatherly protectors and benefactors of the helpless, childlike natives and that their every
act was to be for the good of their wards, I believe Jose Rizal would agree. Dr. Trinidad Pardo de
Tavera detailed the Cavite arsenal mutiny by native Filipino soldiers and laborers opposed to the
Spanish ruthless policies. In my opinion, the Filipino soldiers and staff were reacting to Spanish
oppression rather than attempting to overthrow the government. I agree with Dr. Trinidad
Pardo de Tavera that the mutiny was caused by dissatisfaction with the abolition of privileges.
The 1872 Cavite Mutiny culminated in the abolition of workers' personal benefits and forced
labor. Montero's claim that the Spanish committed no crimes against Filipinos is false. The logic
is skewed because you cannot deny people their rights and expect them to stay claimants. I
believe the unrest began when the Spanish took away the rights of Filipino soldiers and staff.
