National Mental Health Policies


The World Health Organization (WHO) defines mental health
as: a state of well-being in which the individual is aware of his
or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life,
can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a
contribution to your community.

When mental health problems began to emerge in El Salvador,


it was the religious congregations who gave the necessary care
to women with mental disorders.

In 2005, the World Health Organization's Mental Health


Systems Evaluation Instrument found that there was a policy
for this problem, it was not until 2009 that the mental health
reform was promoted in el salvador, a technical team was
created with the mental health unit which were coordinated
by the Directorate of regulation and legislation in health, the
advisory committee was made up of professional psychiatrists

an advisory committee was formed with the participation of


universities, surveillance boards, medical college, ISSS, MINSAL,
MINED, national mental health committee, among others,
technical and public consultations were held in which regional
workshops proposed on the website were organized of the
MINSAL, the document was presented to the Vice Minister of
health policies, this is subject to modifications based on the
owner's assessment, for its officialization.
