Possessive Pronouns

❖ Replacement of the noun to avoid repetition in both speech and


writing.

Ex: That car is my car . (Incorrect)

That car is mine. ( Correct)

❖ They refer to something that was mentioned earlier.

Ex: This jacket is his.


❖ We can use possessive pronouns after preposition of.

Exs: Peter is a friend of mine.

This dog is one of yours , right ?


❖ Usually they will be accompanied by demonstrative pronouns (this ,
that , these ,those)
Exs : This notebook is mine.

That is her pencil.


❖ To ask questions we use the verb to be.

Ex : Is this your cat ?

❖ Possessive pronouns perform the function of nouns in addition they


are not variable but invariable.

❖ They will never be preceded by an article whether it is defined or


undefined.
❖ Avoid redundancies in writing.
❖ They can replace one or more substantive expressions that were
previously used in the sentence.

Ex: Her English is better than mine.

❖ They will never be used before a noun, but they do not suffer gender
bending and are the same pronouns in both the singular and the plural.

❖ Possessive pronouns appear both in the middle and at the end of the
sentence.

Ex: My dog is a labrador and your dog is a German- Shepherd (Incorrect)

My dog is a Labrador and yours is a German-Shepherd
