The Beer-story

“God made beer because he loves us and wants us to be happy.”

- Benjamin Franklin

In our modern generation we have encountered that beer is labeled as an adult

beverage, that we grew to know that drinking it is highly prohibited to kids due the active
content of the alcohol in it. However, as I have watched the documentary of “How the
beer saved the world” it piqued my mind of the things that they have mentioned and
researched about the history of it, which are utterly shocking because you wouldn’t think
of the beer that way, in a very helpful way to the extent that it is a need before. In the
documentary it was mentioned that the historians, archaeologists and/or the
anthropologists thinks that beer is where almost everything started of for the America. It
is the main reason for the America to be this big in present-day. That beer gave the idea
unconsciously to the old age period people to produce further from the simple livelihood
before. It somehow lessens the hunting of food because the agriculture started to
bloom, perhaps the historians are right about beer being the cornerstone of civilization
and medicine.

According to the documentary that I have watched, it said there that thousand years
ago stone age people only care for food in order to survive which I also guess as a fact,
though maybe an accident happened when they started picking plants and put it in a jar
and a rain came down thus the jar full of barley, fermented over days then boom, beer.
Maybe it’s true that accident happened because almost everything we have now came
from accidents, aren’t they? Perhaps, I am wrong that it’s not an accident, who knows.
In that “accident” humans always think about how stuffs have been made or how it
happened, I guess that is where all things started when the people back then started to
think that caused them to produce such product (beer) and as the same happenings on
earth, things tends to change in order for that beer to exist and has its own worth. The
beer’s worth made things improved the community that we have in the past, from cage
to building simple huts, into making high and mighty pyramids of Giza. In doing of that
makes civilization occur, group of people living in one area are having an improved way
of living and I think that is a very smart plan they never know.

At first, it sounded ridiculous for me that the beer helped to shaped America to what
it is today but as I’ve watched the video, I grew to understand that they are somewhat
making sense to me, not just because of the experiences that helped them but mainly to
the evidences they have found and tested them if their theories are right. With the help
of the modern medicine they tested the things of how are things made before, of how
the beers helped in a medical way. I am awed that the presence of Tetracycline in a
mummified bone exist because it is way far from the Before Christ era to the 18th
century of when the medicine started to emerge. It proved that beer did not just help to
build civilization but also in medicine, although the funny thing is the people before have
no idea about its helpful use.

In my opinion, beer is never bad at all. I have learned that this beer we called
unnecessary to drink because it is harmful to health is not really a threat, it just needed
the right handling of drinking it. We never know that this beer was a savior from the
past, it saved thousands of lives from a water plague, they used the water to turn to
beer to be able to drink it without feeling sick. Beers of the past has its benefits to
humans that made things more economically needed to todays used. For those reasons
I have mentioned in this reflection made me agree to Benjamin Franklin’s quote, I’m just
not really sure if it’s true but maybe he is right that “God made beer because he loves
us and wants us to be happy.” Truth to be told, today beer does makes us happy,
makes us connected, makes us happily wasted when we feel sad and I think that’s
wonderful.
