HOT SITZ BATH

Hot Sitz Bath – is a type of therapy, by sitting in a warm shallow


water. Is also a partial immersion bath covering the hip, pelvi and
anal region with water.

Benefit of Using Hot Sitz Bath After Birth

a. Improved blood flow to the perineal area by reducing swelling


and Inflammation and promotes healing.
b. Relaxes the muscle in the perineum which can relieve the pain
on a tear or episiotomy.
c. Sooth the soreness that comes from childbirth stretching.
d. Relieve the Itching that often accompanies stretching.
e. Keep the things clean down there, helping to lower the risk of
infection.
• Sitz is a Geman word “sitzen” which means to sit.
• Sitz Bath Procedure using Sitz Bowl

a. Lift the toilet lid and seat. Place the clean plastic sitz bowl
on the rim of the toilet. Make sure that the bowl is firmly
in place.
b. Fill the sitz bowl with warm water that should cover the
perineum. Make sure that water temperature is
comfortable.
c. Gently sit down on the sitz bowl asking help from the
family member or caregiver.
d. Sit in water for 10 – 20 minutes.
e. Add more warm water needed to keep the
water comfortable.
f. Get up slowly from the sitz bath bowl asking
help from the family member or caregiver.
g. Gently pat the genitalia, perineum and the
anal area dry with clean towel.
h. Wash the sitz bah bowl with soap and water
after each use.
i. Use sitz bath 2 – 3 times a day or as often as
your heath care provider advises.
