ACTION PLAN FOR BASEBALL ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY

Overview

Baseball, usually considered the national sport or pastime of the United States, originated in the
country, and quickly spread to the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, England, Spain, Australia,
Tunisia, and other parts of the world.
Baseball was popularized heavily and is widely considered to mirror the spirit of the United
States. So many articles on the history of baseball and softball, which were not very clearly
based on historical reports, were made up and propagated by the media. But the common
consensus arrived recently owing to its immense popularity in the United States of America. It is
said to be a North American modification of older English games like Rounders and Stoolball
which also influenced other similar games like Cricket.
The game turned professional after the Civil War in 1860s and attracted commercial interests,
yet amateur baseball is equally popular and was separated from the professional one in 1871.
Though the sport was initially played among teams of various ethnic groups in the States, like
the German Americans, the African Americans, and the Irish Americans. The sport helped in
bringing harmony among the diverse ethnic groups and the native Americans in the 80’s and
90’s.

Objective
Baseball is a team game played by two teams of nine players each on an enclosed Baseball, field
under the direction of a manager in accordance with rules under the jurisdiction of one or more
umpires.
An offending player tries to hit the ball away from the reach of the defenders and score runs by
running around the bases. Players of the defending team try to out the player who is batting. Both
the teams take turns batting and fielding. Three consecutive outs from each team make an
innings, and nine innings make a game. The objective of each team is to win by scoring more
runs and try to prevent opponents from scoring runs.

Team Members

Baseball is a team game; it has two teams of nine active players each. While one team plays
defense (fielders), the other team plays offense (batters).
Substitute players include catchers, relievers, infielders, outfielders, and other players
specializing in pinch-hitting. If a hitter replaces the starting player in the batting order he is
called a pinch hitter. A player replacing a base runner is called a pinch runner.
The offensive team that has to bat sends its batsman as per the batting order decided by the
umpire. The batsman, who is at bat, stays in the batting box to hit the balls pitched by the
pitcher of the defending team. Some batsmen can strike with both their hands, such batters are
called Switch-Hitters. The Catcher, also called Behind, stays behind the batsman to pick any
balls he missed.
Players are further identified by their special skills. The team’s best pitcher usually pitches first
and is called an Ace. Anyone with all-around skills is called a Utility player and can fill any
position the situation demands. A relief pitcher replaces the starting pitcher and the relief pitcher
who finishes the game is called a Closer. Sometimes the starting pitcher pitches for the whole
game, in that case he is said to have pitched a Complete Game.
Apart from players, training and managing personnel also work with players in a team. Each
team has a manger to make strategic decisions like deciding the batting order, starting rotation,
line-up, and deciding when to introduce pinch hitter as a substitute. Players of a team are trained
in hitting, fielding, and pitching by two coaches. Base coaches stand on the bases to suggest the
players. Two or more umpires declare outcomes and look over the running of the game.

In Preparation: (Post Pandemic)

1. The Division Sports Officer, Event Tournament Manager, Coaches, School Principal, Team
Coordinators, and Officiating Officials should develop a communication plan within each
team. The method of communication plan should be agreed upon and applicable on all
platforms and parent or guardians plays a vital role in these communication platforms hence
they’re the one who permits the participation of their respective child in every participating
school or team.
2. Likewise, communication platforms should also be developed on the opposing side or the
opposing team. Important details or information should be addressed properly relative to the
protocol addressed by the IATF and other health protocols that need to be observed strictly.
3. Coaches who have direct contact with their athletes should advise their players to “Stay at
Home if sick”. Attending sports events in this kind of situation is strictly prohibited and
therefore the right information is needed.
IF a Player Test Positive of COVID:

4. Coach A should gather the basic information related to the case for immediate response.
5. Likewise, the opposing Coach should also conduct a thorough investigation and disseminate
the right and correct information to the proper authority.
6. Develop immediately a communication protocol for that positive and close contact individual
in order to mitigate the spread of the virus.
7. Immediately seek the assistance of the public health investigator to handle the case for proper
guidance and allow the local government to make an immediate plan to stop the spread of the
said virus
8. Notify also the other participating teams about the case so they can also help gather
information or other means they can extend help or assistance.
9. Lastly, don’t ever forget to notify the members of the family of those who tested positive and
remind them strictly to follow protocols for fast recovery results.
10. Finally, proper coordination among each team and key personnel should be seriously
observed and strict compliance is necessary.

Learning Objectives:

Objective #1.

 Determine the frequency of team or ball club preparation for the past two (2) years

How far is the preparation of each ball club concerned for the past two years of distance learning
modality?

Table 1:

School Year Level of Participation Results

2019-2020 Division Meet Middle of March 2020, the
EVRAA was cut short due to
PANDEMIC
2020-2021 NONE Restricted due to global health
crisis
2021-2022 NONE The restriction was a little bit
open but strict protocol guidance
in all contact sports is being
observed

The table shows that the frequency of ball club preparation in each team is affected and therefore the
implication is inclusive to all concerned. Meaning from the off-season, pre-season, in-season, and post-
season, there were no serious tournament activities being done due to the restriction and the law
implemented
