The selfishness and indifferences in the modern world

Praxis Framewrok:Humanistic Prespective

Christine Mae Gimenez

The Sounds of Silence", is song by the American music duo Simon & Garfunkel. Written by
Paul Simon, and released on September 12, 1965.The songs genre is Folk Rock, and produced by
Tom Wilson. It gives a glimpse of reality that people are unable to communicate with each other.
This song is to remind us that our thoughts deserve to hear and understood. Therefore, we should
not be afraid of speaking out the thoughts that we have both personal and social. “And in the
naked light I saw, ten thousand people, maybe more, People talking without speaking, People
hearing without listening. People writing songs that voices never share, and no one dared,
Disturb the sound of silence.” I can relate this to one of the Principles of Psychology which is
Humanistic Perspective. The humanistic perspective centers on the view that each person is
unique and individual and has the free will to change at any time in his or her life. We are
responsible for our own happiness and well-being as humans. We innate our capacity for self-
actualization, which is our desire to achieve our highest protentional as people.

One of the global issues that we faced is mental health. Mental health includes our emotional,
psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine
how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. According to the World Health
Organization around 450 million people worldwide live with a mental illness. Majority of these
people suffer from depression. the cause of mental health issues is complex due to the fact that
every person is unique, for every human who suffer a mental disorder there are varied reasons
why. To be able to help this people we must take time empathize and understand them. Let them
feel heard and not feel alone. This a example of how important being heard is and being able to
communicate our thoughts well and why people should take time to understand each other. There
is line in the song The Sound of Silence, “Hello darkness, my old friend, I've come to talk with
you again” I understand that he feels alone with nobody to communicate his thoughts. Nobody
who sees what he sees. In the Humanistic perspective of Psychology theory by Carl Rogers . The
theory is about the importance of the self-actualizing tendency in shaping human personalities.
He also believed that humans are constantly reacting to what their subjective reality is, which
changes continuously. Over time, a person develops a self-concept of who they from this field of
reality. our thoughts and feelings about ourselves. How would you respond to the question,
“Who am I?” Your answer can show how you see yourself. If your response is primarily
positive, then you tend to feel good about who you are, and you see the world as a safe and
positive place. If your response is negative, then you may feel unhappy with who you are. We
experience congruence when our thoughts about our real self and ideal self are similar. High
congruence leads to a greater sense of self-worth and a healthy, productive life. Congruence is
how closely one’s real self matches up with their ideal self. To be able to achieve congruence
unconditional positive regard, or unconditional love is needed so that a person would feel
accepted and prized, they tend to develop a more caring attitude towards themselves when
unconditional positive regard is present in their lives. The songs are a brilliant piece of literary
art. A song that holds so many meanings waiting to be heard, read, and understood by us. Our
lives now are fast paced and people forget to stop and reflect, to understand ourselves and th e
people around us.

In the Philippines colorism is very active. Yes, it is a issue because it put an unrealistic beauty
standard. The original inhabitants of the Philippines are called “Atas“They were dark skinned,
had curly hair and a flat nose. Yet our beauty standards or the opposite. I have nothing against
being white, but I am against colorism. It is not fair to call someone ugly because they have
brown skin. The skin color and how a person looks should not be the reason they are
discriminated. It is what is in the inside that matters. Colorism continues to be prevalent in
Filipino society is because of the external influences from both the beauty and entertainment
industries. It is hard for most people to disassociate from that attitude and embrace their own
version of beauty. We need to start embracing all skin tones not only in the Philippines, but
in all countries and places as well. This relates to the song “The Sounds of Silence” is a song
about the inability of people to communicate with each other. The social media is biases we
really should be careful on the information that we receive because some might be for personal
gains and not spreading awareness for clout and attention. We innate our capacity for self-
actualization, which is our desire to achieve our highest protentional as people. So, it is very
crucial that we are careful with the information we received because it could affect us in a bad
way. There is one line that I could associate this from the song “And the people bowed and
prayed, To the neon god they made" People still blinded with false idols, money, and false
promises, and empty dreams served by the mass media controlled by establishment and used to
brainwash and control people. The humanistic perspective innates our capacity for self-
actualization, which is our desire to achieve our highest protentional as people. In the situation of
Colorism, it prevents someone to feel good about who they are, and see the world as a safe and
positive place. This prevents people develop a more caring attitude towards themselves and live
they best version of them.
With all the information that I have gathered, the song, and articles that I read. They taught me to
be real no matter if it is not acceptable to the society because at least we are staying true to
ourselves and that is one of the keys on living a happy life. Being able to be you and not change
for someone just because it is not considered acceptable in the society. We should learn how to
be heard by people we should, and we also should learn how to hear people. No man is an Island.
We are all here, because each one of us has a purpose and we should serve that purpose. That is
why It is important to be heard and to listen take time to reflect on what has life been for them
are they still happy are they true to who they are. know ourselves; we know what is right and
wrong. We are taught by our raised by our parent to be a good citizen of this country. This made
me sad because this a reality that we are facing, and this made me want to spread awareness
about what I have learned throughout making this paper. We are responsible for our own
happiness and well-being as humans. We innate our capacity for self-actualization, which is our
desire to achieve our highest protentional as people. Not everything is true in social media. We
should start unfollowing those people who makes us feel less about ourselves and who we start
comparing ourselves to, because that is not healthy for us it will drown us with toxicity. I plan to
change my ways on how I used social media and read more articles related to this praxis paper.
In that way I have knowledge and some wisdom to spread to my love ones in my own little way I
can circulate the information little by little.
