Meaning, Nature and Scope of Education

Three words such as ‘educare’ (to bring up), ‘educere’(to draw out), and ‘educo’(to lead) help
us to understand the clear meaning of the word ‘Education’. The word Education is
originated from these words. Education is something that needs to be nourished and trained
by an individual. An educator must make the children and push their curiosity to understand
more. Education is drawing out the best in a child and the educator must provide an
environment that it helps in the overall development of the child. Education refers to the
overall development of the child that includes Physical, Moral, Mental, Social, Cultural,
Emotional, etc. Education is not something that happens only in the classroom, it can happen
in the outside world too. Education is not instruction so we can say that

When it comes to the nature of education, there are many characteristics of education. One of
the chief characteristics of education is that it is a lifelong process. This is true because
education does not end when we formally complete our higher education. Education can
happen in informal settings too and not only in formal settings. Education is bipolar as it
plays an important role in influencing both the child and the teacher. Another characteristic of
education is that it is balanced development. Balanced development can happen only if
physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, moral development or the overall development occurs.
Education has a definite purpose so we can say that education is purposive. Another nature of
education is that it modifies and shapes the behaviour of the child. Education is closely linked
with other areas of discipline such as Philosophy, Sociology and Psychology. While studying
Education, it is very important to understand how education is closely related to other areas
of knowledge. Education helps to train human senses, behaviour and mind. Education is also
a means to direct a child. Education helps the child to learn and directs him/her to use the
knowledge wisely.

When it comes to the scope of education, education has a very wider meaning. It also means
the different subjects that need to be studied. As mentioned earlier, Education is very much
linked to other disciplines of knowledge such as psychology, sociology, philosophy, etc. That
is why we have educational philosophy, educational psychology, educational sociology, the
economics of education, history of education, etc.
