OBJECTIVES/STANDARDS Students will participate in the ceremony


of the 12 activity, write journal entries and
fill out “job positions” while illustrating
their understanding of character
dynamics, motivations, goals, and
conflicts.

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

The purpose of this activity is to help further engage students in their reading of The
Giver while providing them with a better structure to analyze characters and their
dynamics. This activity is a student-centered assignment and relies upon students' ability
to refer to previous reading and expand upon that knowledge to participate in this
assignment.

EDUCATION STANDARDS

1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the events of the previous


chapters through activity simulation
2. Students will accomplish character evaluations in a multitude of learning styles to

give them a common basis for analysis

OBJECTIVES

1. Welcome Students and review the previous day's learning objective


2. Ceremony of the 12 Simulation instructions and new objective
3. Group work session review job roles and responsibilities
4. Teacher-led instructions on assignments (job application and journal work)
5. Student work on both assignments
6. Assign homework (finish any remaining work on assignments and finish the next
chapter of the Giver)

ACTIVITY
After lifting the projector screen to reveal a colorful The Ceremony of Twelve poster
behind it, immediately transformed into The Chief Elder. Address the class explaining
that although they have spent the last 11 years learning to fit in and standardize their

behavior, this ceremony will celebrate their differences. Following this, I will give the
class instructions before one-by-one presenting each student with their new job and a
designated card that states all of the roles and responsibilities. After each student gets
their assignment, have the rest of the class say in unison, “Thank you for your
childhood.” Now students will be given handouts with instructions on the assignments.
Students will then fill out an application for the job and write a journal discussing their
feelings about their new role in the community, and reflect on character’s growth.
