TERM PROJECT (2021)

A heat exchanger is to be designed to condense 1100 kg/h of steam at 150 kPa. For this
purpose, cooling water at 50oC is available in sufficient quantity to accomplish the cooling.
You are to design a shell-and-tube heat exchanger with steam in the shell as the condenser.
Select 3 alternatives for the tube bank, tube size and tube pass, and

a) calculate the convection coefficients for condensation and forced flow through the tubes.

b) determine the length of the heat exchanger.

c) calculate the pressure drop through the tubes for each selection.

d) Recommend a final design which specifies water flow rate, tube size, number of tubes, and
tube length.

e) Comment on your selection.

Deadline to submit your project: 17.01.2022

Your report must include cover page, question, solution steps, calculations, results,
discussion, and references.
