Formative Assessment

Frankly, in defining formative assessment in an educational setting, assessment seems to

not fully fit the definition: a tool for educators to use to guide instruction and receive feedback.

In my mind, assessment is still associated with grades and sort of a finishing move after the

conclusion of instruction, and it is a bit difficult to wrap my head around. However,

understanding the concept has allowed me to understand their necessity and usage in classrooms.

Formative assessment can be used before, during, and after a lesson to encourage student

success, for instance, by using an app like Afterschool, Padlet, or even Kahoot to collect

anonymous answers. Using these new applications, a teacher can engage students with their

technology and also encourage them using older check for understanding activities, such as

Thumbs up, Thumbs down, or Thumbs sideways to gauge understanding.

Using Ziplet, I can set up my class and either schedule questions or pose them as I go for each of

my classes! By using this application, My students can answer anonymously to their peers, and I

can create a classroom norm so that students know the expectations of when this application is to

be used. Having said that, this is incredibly easy to use and set up for different types of questions

throughout the lesson, before and after.
