Form: 3

Topic: Building a Lifting Device

CONTEXT

Over time, increasingly complicated devices have been created to enable mechanical work to be
completed easily. These devices provide advantages so that tasks that are too difficult or
dangerous for humans to perform can be easily carried out.

CHALLENGE

Your group is required to report on different lifting devices that have been invented over the time
to provide the mechanical support to accomplish various tasks. Your group is to design and build
a mechanical device that can lift a small object to a height of 20 cm, rotate it 30° to the left or
right and rest it on a higher level.
SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES

You will be able to:

 Identify various lifting devices invented over time;

 Identify possible solutions to the challenge;
 Build a working lifting device;
 Select and use tools safely;
 Test and evaluate efficiency of the device;
 Make recommendations for the future development of the device.

MATERIALS/RESOURCES

Internet access, library, resource personnel, basic hand tools, wood, nut, bolts, screws, syringes,
pulleys, string, rubber tubing, DC motors, miniature gear box, and any other materials or tools
