FOREWORD

Since writing is one of the key components in doing well in the SPM English, the production of
this module is timely. Indeed, more emphasis should be given to develop this skill in the
classroom by giving students plenty of practice and support.

While undertaking the task of writing this module, the writers had in mind the ‘near-miss’
students whose borderline performance affects the overall achievement of the subject in public
examinations. This group of students certainly needs to be given due attention particularly in the
area of writing.

The writers decided to focus on two types of compositions namely descriptive and narrative
compositions. It was the general consensus that the two genres would help this group of
learners as they are more manageable compared to factual and argumentative compositions.
There are twelve units under narrative composition and seven units under descriptive
compositions. All the units complement the mainstream SPM English syllabus. Simple
strategies and activities in teaching writing have been used in the module to help the target
learners to write.

Teachers should view the module as a supplementary resource to complement their teaching in
the classroom. It is my sincere hope that teachers will make full use of the module and adapt as
necessary.

I would like to thank the group of writers for all their effort and contributions in making this
endeavour a success.
