LO: Learn how to solve quadratic

equations by factorising.
If we have A x B = 0, then what do we know about
the values of A and B?

Either A = 0 or B = 0.

This idea is called the ‘Zero Product Property’.

We can use this to help us solve equations

where the left-hand side is factorised and the
right-hand side is zero.
Solve x(x - 8) = 0

By the zero product property, either

x=0 or x–8=0

If x – 8 = 0
x=8

Solutions are x = 0 or x =8
Solve (x - 2)(x + 3) = 0

By the zero product property, either

x–2=0 or x+3=0

If x – 2 = 0 If x + 3 = 0
x=2 x=-3

Solutions are x = -3 or x = 2
Solve (2x - 5)(x + 1) = 0

By the zero product property, either

2x – 5 = 0 or x+1=0

If 2x – 5 = 0 If x + 1 = 0
 2x = 5 x=-1

(x – 3) (x - 3) = 0
x-3=0 or x-3=0
x=3 x=3

Solutions is x = 3
(1) Solve the following quadratic equations
(a) x2 + 16x = 0
(b) x2 - 6x + 8 = 0
(c) x2 + x - 12 = 0

For difference of two square problems, we can use an
alternative method!
