Background of the Study

“Technology will never replace great teachers, but in the hands of great teachers,
it’s transformational.” (George Corus). The rise of technology has been very obvious in
the past years. It had become our “best friend” while doing our work. It has been very
affordable that almost everybody, rich or poor, can afford it. Before the pandemic struck,
traditional learning was a must for students as technology back then are not that
affordable to everyone. During the pandemic, traditional learning (face-to-face learning)
was impossible so students and their teachers turned to using technology to be able to
interact.
Now that the pandemic is over traditional learning was slowly coming back with a
touch of technology. The researchers want to know if technology-based education has
had an effect on student’s motivation on studying and their performance in their
education. We also want to study if it has connections on their computer literacy skills.
Back in the day technology was being integrated on every classroom. There are
presentations and everything but teachers tend to stick to traditional learning and
students that are not that skilled in using technology also stuck with traditional learning.
But, that doesn’t mean technology didn’t help in their studies. According to a study
conducted on United States, students’ engagement and enthusiasm on learning was
increased by 5-10% when technology is present compared to traditional learning.
(Bannit, Theis & Leeuwe, 2013). A similar study was also conducted on China and
yielded the following results. Technology had a positive effect on the students as they
like using it while learning especially on the English subject. This previous learning
experience greatly affected their final grade. (Yu-Lin, 2015).
In the Philippines, technology is slowly being integrated in to the K-12
Curriculum. Recently, DepEd built up a program called This program was called “The
Digital Rise Program” which has 3 components; digital literacy, ICT Assisted Teaching,
and ICT Assisted Learning. Diosdado San Antonio hoped that this program could
provide better educational experience for students. Before this program was
implemented, Souza et al (2021) conducted research regarding Filipino student’s
reaction on their teacher's integrating technology in their classroom. Results showed
that they are more motivated and engaged in language learning when teachers have a
stronger belief in using student-centered teaching to integrate technology.
Students liked having technology side by side with traditional learning and it
seems to develop student’s motivation on learning. As claimed by Francis (2022),
students are motivated when technology is specifically used in the classroom, whether it
is for educational goals or for accommodations as stipulated by an Individual Education
Plan (IEP) or 504 plans. The motivation of students can be improved and teaching
methods should be updated to better facilitate inclusionary education. As we all know
motivation is the key for students to persist and finish their study with flying colors.
Without technology it will be very difficult as student’s interest will fade away as they
continue on their education.
Now, many studies have often looked on the connection of technology-based
education to student’s motivation and academic performance, but they have not
adequately explored the connection of technology-based education on student’s
computer literacy skills and their confidence as computer literate students. For instance,
are there any connections between the student’s confidence on their computer skills
and motivation while using technology on their education?
In the rise of technology at the same time integrating it to education, the
researchers conducted this study so that we can identify this connection between the
student’s confidence and motivation while using technology on their studies so that we
can give advice on how would technology be integrated so that it can enhance both
student’s motivation and computer literacy at the same time.
